All three morning news shows gave prominent attention to the news that former National Security Advisor Sandy Berger is under investigation for alledegdly stealing classified information from the National Archives.
Pierre Thomas handled Berger duties for 'Good Morning America,' Pete Williams for the 'Today Show, and Bill Plante's piece on CBS Early Show actually focused on the 9/11 Comission's report in general, not on the Berger news.
David Gergen a former Clinton Democratic advisor vouched for Berger on NBC's Today program calling him a 'hero' in the war on terror, a man of 'utter integrity' and saying that is was 'suspicious' that this would leak just before the release of the 9/11 Commission report.
'It is not even clear to Berger that an investigation is still under way, Gergen said, 'and no charges have been brought against him.'
When NBC's Katie Couric followed up and asked Gergen if he was suggesting that this story might be coming out now as a 'distraction' from the 9/11 report, Gergen said, 'It has those overtones, Let's let more facts come out.'
Gergen said that he doesn't think the Gergen story 'refelects on Senator Kerry.' He did say however, that 'what would hurt the Kerry campaign would be if Sandy had to withdraw' from his role as an advisor to the Kerry campaign.

I don't care if the timing is suspicious or not. The fact still remains that Bill Clintons national security advisor was caught STEALING classified documents regaurding terrorism.
Why hasn't Berger been charged? He admits to a felony.
The timing of anything that casts the Democrat ticket in a negative light between now and November will be "suspect."
Oh the hue and cry should Osama bin Laden be captured or killed in that time-frame. I can hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth already.
I will admit to a certain smug satisfaction when the clamor begins, however. It may not be the most honorable thing in the world, but I do like to kick an opponent when he's down.
Hey Dave, the "timing is supsicious"? What about Berger stealing and then losing the documents? I guess you don't have a problem with that.
Suspicious? What do ya mean? Just because the dims convention is next week?
Great timing if you ask me. Clinton could not have timed it better.
These two are inextricably linked in my head.
I keep expecting Gergen to whip out a huge mallet and pound someone over the head with it.
Guess somebody got "snookered"
And it is also interesting that Carlin was governor of Kansas at the same time that Clinton was governor of Arkansas--betcha they were friends through the governor's conferences!
Agree totally. When I was in the Navy we would have been fried for any action like this. There are very strict procedures for handling classified documents and this "hero" violated them. He should be treated like anyone else who violates the rules, charge him.
Funny, I just went over to the NYT site and their article actually says Berger returned all the documents. But AP and Reuters quote him as saying he discarded some.
The Today Show:
I will not watch them on a box.
I will not watch them with a fox.
I would not watch them with a wife.
I would not watch to save my life.
I will not watch them in the morn.
I will not watch while eating corn.
I won't watch them of this I'm sure.
Katie Couric's a lying whore.
But defending someone who's actions are a foregone conclusion isn't, right David?
Gergen, just another Jim Jones' disciple on the road to a cool-aid retirement plan.
Done
I posted this morning I saw Gergen on MSNBC. Most likely they were airing his Today Show appearance.
He has evidently completely thrown his lot in with the dark side whereas before he tried to straddle between the two.
He minimized Berger's actions by pointing out there were still copies available, including the ones "destroyed". Yes, he used the word with a straight face, yet was taking up for Berger.
Then he raised the issue of why this is appearing in the media now when the investigation has been going on for a long time.
The Dems have to call this a conspiracy.
Otherwise, they have to admit to one of two things: Kerry's advisors are incompetent boobs at best, or they're a buncha liars and crooks subject to being compromised at worst.
Mike Barnicle is on MSNBC. Asked how this affects the Kerry campaign.
Barnicle says it's good for a LAUGH.
Says the idea of Berger stuffing documents in his clothing is comical.
Oh, my.
To her credit, the female anchor had framed the question as Kerry has criticized the Bush administration for not cooperating completely with the 9/11 commission and now we hear that Sandy Berger who is advising Kerry was taking documents. Then Barnicle pronounced it all one big joke.
And the right wing conspiracy had a gun in Fat Sandy's back forcing him to remove those classified documents...
(hey, Sandy, that video camera above your head is working...)
How this clown ever got a law degree from Harvard is absolutely mind boggling!!!
He's got less sense than a fence post!
And to think he was NSA Chief??
No wonder our national security went to hell in a handbasket during the Klintoon years!
