I suppose it doesn't matter that she was never charged with insider trading. She was convicted for lying to police.
She was not even under oath.
I wonder how many people have gone to prison for lying while being questioned by police.
In Saudi Arabia, they'd cut her head off.
I thought the prosecution was over-reaching on some things. It is problematic to not be able to prove that someone committed the actual crime but then get them for lying about the actual crime you can't prove they committed.
I really don't understand why they made Martha's the token case to prosecute. What about all the stock manipulation that helped create the NASDAQ bubble five years ago? What about the special treatment given to privileged clients by Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse First Boston, Schwab, and other big brokerage companies, to the great detriment of the other investors? But no, they chose to pick a not very lovable celebrity who committed a relatively minor (compared to the serious cases I just mentioned) offense. It's just strange.
I see your point. This whole thing seems crazy to me. To picture Martha in prison with "real" criminals just doesnt jive with me.
Here, here! Yes, this is a shameful day. The gubbernuts have gotten out of control. The only reason they went after her is because she's famous.
