The leader of America's largest civil rights organization on Monday attacked African American groups that he said were helping white conservatives promote a right-wing agenda.
Kweisi Mfume, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, condemned the groups as a "collection of black hustlers" who have adopted a conservative agenda in return for "a few bucks a head."
"When the ultraconservative right-wing attacker has run out of attack strategy, he goes and gets someone that looks like you and me to continue the attack," Mfume said in his opening address to the NAACP's annual convention.
"They've financed a conservative coalition of make-believe black organizations, all of them hollow shells with more names on the letterhead than there are people in their membership," he said.
John White, a spokesman for the NAACP, said this was the first time Mfume has publicly attacked other black groups.
Mfume did not name his targets but they are believed to include Project 21, a Washington, D.C.-based organization whose Web site says it is dedicated to issues such as entrepreneurial spirit and the family that have "not traditionally been echoed by the nation's civil rights establishment."
David Almasi, director of Project 21, acknowledged there is "probably" an ideological divide between his group and the NAACP but said Project 21 is financially independent from political parties.
"We take no marching orders from anyone," he said.
Almasi said Mfume's comments may have been aimed at the African American Republican Leadership Council, whose mission is to "break the liberal Democrat stranglehold over black America," according to its Web site.
Although the NAACP is officially non-partisan, only about 9 percent of African American voters supported George W. Bush in the 2000 presidential election, the group said.
The NAACP, founded in 1909, says it has 500,000 adult and youth members.
Sounds like Mfume is in denial that some are seeing the light...

I'd like to see them all reach success and happiness , and ignore the left wing liars that keep telling them how dumb they are, how they need help reading a ballot, how they couldn't possibly make it on their own without holding the hand of a democrat politician. Can't help but wonder.....When MLK gave his "I have a dream" speech....Didn't he speak of people not looking at the color of a person's skin, but looking at their value as a human being.....Isn't that what "W" is doing? ie: Condi, Paige, Powell....? WHo is always bringing up race and expecting different treatment because of the color of skin? Some people truly just don't get it!

Remember, this is the party that didn’t want Lincoln to go to war, and were ready to cede the South from the Union (and therefore to slavery), being that most southerners were Democrats anyway. The term for the anti-war Democrats, especially in the North, was Copperheads, and I think we aught to resurrect that term today. These “Peace Democrats” were opposed to the war and were intent on accepting a negotiated peace with the South resulting in an independent Confederate States of America. Of course, they [Democrats] would have also been accepting the Confederate’s Constitutionality of slavery without putting up a fight, but when has the humanity of any other human on Earth ever been the actual concern of a Democrat?

You are so right my friend. The Prez received 8% of the black vote in 2000. If he can push that up to 15% this time, turn out the lights; the party's over. When he ran for reelection of Gov. of Texas, he rec'd over 30% of the black vote.
I must give the NAACP leadership this much credit however. The aren't using the terms "Uncle Tom" or "Oreo" anymore. Racism is getting sophisticated.
why focus disgust on the leaders? 92% of blacks agree with them.
