WASHINGTON — U.S. intelligence agencies are growing increasingly concerned that al Qaeda's next target in the United States could be the heart of America's economy — Wall Street.
Counterterrorism officials told The Post last night that new terrorist "chatter," picked up from intercepted phone calls and Internet chat rooms, indicates Islamic fanatics have Wall Street and other financial institutions in their cross hairs as part of a second terror attack inside America.
Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge and other Bush administration officials issued a high-profile warning last week. They said new intelligence information indicated that Osama bin Laden and his top deputies are personally involved in planning an attack inside the United States that could be timed before the November election.
Ridge and U.S. officials say they are not aware of any specific plans.
But law-enforcement officials said a Wall Street attack has been the subject of recent inter-agency discussions between the CIA, the FBI, the Treasury Department, the Department of Homeland Security and other law-enforcement agencies.
Security has been dramatically increased around the New York Stock Exchange and other high-profile financial institutions around the country since the 9/11 attacks as bin Laden himself has made clear several times that an attack on the U.S. economy is a priority.

My son is a NYC cop and not to give secrets away but any intended attack on a high value target in lower Manhattan would be met by a warm reception by some still very pissed-off cops.
At least they have the good sense to attack Wall Street if they want to harm the US. Not a mention of the Washington beltway.
When I was in Manhattan a few months ago the place was like an armed camp. There were literally ski-masked paramilitaries standing outside my hotel with M16s in hand. There were two cops walking down the street for every civilian.
It occurred to me that if it is as GW Bush has claimed - that Osama Bin Laden was attacking "American Freedom" - that he must be pretty happy with the results of his handiwork.
Those were Bloomberg's smoking cops.

Excepting Reagan, the federal government has been attacking the economy since FDR. Heck, it was the 911 attacks that got Greenspan to give up his massacre of Wall Street he'd been carrying out for nearly two years.
Yes, but they were set up by Kerry in order to get the very effect that you are manifesting.
Wall St is now expendable it can be replaced in a single hour.

I work on Wall Street and there is a huge police presence in the area and, you know what, it has not made any inroads on my *freedom*. However, when "reality shows" such as "American Idol" or "The Apprentice" are holding auditions on Wall Street, the huge lines of people cause the streets to be impassable and cordoned off. That interferes with my freedom, not the police presence on usual workdays.
Of course my son works a block half from the exchange. I would hope by now that critical computer systems have been moved to low-rise suburban centers.

You sound like you are missing the Clintons, they could care less about terrorists attacks, they were too busy going after the "VAST RIGHT WING CONSPRIATORS".
I've wondered just how much this war has cost, already. His plan succeeded that day! He has changed our world! He is still out there (or his replacement)...
I went to Mexico in January, the second time in two years. The Mexican troops are everywhere, armed and beligerent! They are trying to quell an internal uprising.
In this country, we are having our rights eroded, and our freedoms limited. We are living with a gum't that takes from us, and gives to others, that we don't know, or see, both domestic, and foreign. These 'others' even include our enemies!
I hope it doesn't come to an armed rebellion, here! But, the country that most of us fought for, is ceasing to exist! WE are being penalized, by living during this time... and it seems there is nothing we can do about it...

Our freedoms are slowly being eroded, not just by politicians, but by the beaurocrats they designate to f*ck up our lives.
Do you own land? I do, in four states. The states all have an interest in what I do on my land. They tell me constantly, and they require me to "buy" permits, and pay 'fees' before they will allow any action.
They can then control everything I do there, with OSHA, and COE oversight. Those are FED'ROOL beaurocrats, but they are the mentors for the states.
