SYRIA has stepped up its assistance to insurgents in Iraq and is encouraging both secular and Islamist fighters operating across its border, according to Western and Arab officials.
The world's last Baathist state may also have acquired the key components and technology required to manufacture weapons-grade uranium, authorities fear.
At least one former senior Iraqi Baathist official has established himself in a large villa in Damascus, where is he recruiting volunteers and sending them over the border to resistance strongholds such as Fallujah and Ramadi. His operations are conducted with the encouragement of the host Government.
Investigators also believe Syria might have acquired centrifuges for purifying uranium to use in nuclear bombs, through the clandestine sales network of Pakistani scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan.

If we would cut off the key support for the terrorists in Iraq: from Syria and Iran, the "resistence" would collapse.
Where we needed troops in Iraq, was an extra 100,000 along the Syrian border (from the very beginning of the war) and an extra 100,000 along the Iranian border (from the very beginning of the war).
The MX division was manning those fronts, so to speak. That's US warfighting doctrine... we can fight up to two wars with conventional units, and as many others as are necessary with nuclear ones. That's why China, for all its bluster, did not take advantage of our commitment in Iraq to conquer Taiwan, because they know we would be forced into a nuclear response.
In other words we are stronger when we are weaker, because then we will be forced to use nuclear. No thanks.
