Iraqi Official Says Foreign Countries Aided Insurgents

LONDON (AP) - Iraq's interim government has evidence that neighboring countries have helped Iraqi insurgents and will publish its findings this week, a senior minister was quoted as saying Sunday.

In an interview with the London-based Sunday Telegraph newspaper, Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said Iraq had intelligence showing that foreign nations had provided financial support, logistical assistance and training to militants who have waged a campaign of bombings, shootings and kidnappings since the fall of Saddam Hussein.

He did not name the countries, but the newspaper said Iraqi officials have pointed to Syria and Iran.

"Since we started to look at the security situation, we have seen how foreign governments have been helping terrorists," Zebari was quoted as saying. "Why they are doing it we cannot say, but we know where the support is coming from. We have plans to put this before the public within days and it will have a substantial impact.

"Foreign support for terrorists is ongoing," he added. "But it will backfire on those governments. A stable and peaceful Iraq is a better neighbor for them."

Prediction: Iraq's new government will declare martial law and go after the terrorists viciously and without compromise. Since the U.S. Army and Marines cannot be used as the instrument of foreign martial law, a withdrawal will take place much earlier than expected -- probably phased to some friendly Gulf state like Qatar or Bahrain, so as to be ready for conflict with Syria or Iran.

Allawi just named Iran and Syria....While the Amnesty for killing Americans "during the occupation" sounds outrageous to us, the ploy is to say..."Now when you do these things , you are engaging in terror against the Iraqi govt. and people."

New Iraqi govt. will lay out evidence against Iran and Syria....Defectors will give evidence...Mullahs in Iran have been backing Al Queda through Syria, sending Russian arms..

Accused of sending "journalists" from Iran to assassinate very prominent moderate Shia cleric, killing 100s of people(if I recall, car bombs)..and French have been egging Iran on, promising Shia controlled government for Iraq!..I think the report was from John Loftus.

I heard this too, is he a credible source? As much as I cannot stand what France has done the last few years, there is always that lingering thought that they are just an extremely difficult "ally." If this report is true they will have finally defined themselves as a global enemy of freedom. And by association, so will have Kerry.

Not at all. You're learning why we've been at war with them for a thousand years.

so where is the world condemnation and the public demonstrations in the thousands full and outrage that these foreign entities have no legal authority from the UN or that the preemption of this threat of the Iraq political situation has on their sovereignty is morally wrong! What a bunch of hypocrites we have in this world!

Let me correct..The French have promised support if there is a Shia government....I believe they want Iraq to fail to create a just government and THAT is indeed slimy...Why would they SUPPORT a theocracy?..It is inconceivable.

John Loftus is not a government official ..he does have "sources"...he is a former Justice Dept official..writes books and has an interesting resume, I just googled.

Not at all. They make the best customers for the French to sell arms to. The French lost billions of $$ when we overthrew Saddam. The US won't generally sell arms to these regimes and that leaves an opening for the French to step in. Always follow the money trail.

My family lived in Germany in 1968 ..When my husband's job was finishing up, we waited til the last possible minute to even consider a weekend in Paris before going home...

De Gaulle had me furious. He had kicked our troops out, dropped out of NATO, and one of our officials asked if we should also dig up our cemeteries, I believe...

Come now, surely you remember where the Ayatollah Khomeni took refuge, and who sent him back to Iran in 1979?

The French have been at the head of that list since the fall of the USSR. And even then, let us not forget, the Russian people were never our enemies. There are individual Frenchmen I know of good character, but their political culture is such a cesspool that they always seem to be on the wrong side of the free.

Whatever happened to liberty, fraternity, equality?..Are they the only ones deserving?...I recall about Khomeni...I must be using my mostly submerged idealistic thinking.

Whatever happened to liberty, fraternity, equality?..

Those were the ideals of the French Revolution...which ended up putting a more onerous dictator in charge (Napoleon) than Louis XVI.

?..Are they the only ones deserving?...

Remember France is only a semi-free country. For example, the press in Paris knew that Mitterand was dying of cancer for part of his Presidency. However this vital fact was suppressed at will by the government.
