[TN] Legislators already want 'certificate of driving' law revamped
Williamson County Review Appeal ^ | July 2, 2004 | Associated Press

Excerpts [Gannett publication] from the Printer-friendly version:

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tennessee's new driver's certificate for people who cannot prove legal citizenship in the United States has state legislators on both sides of the issue agreeing that changes need to be made to the law.

Two Murfreesboro Republicans, Sen. Bill Ketron and Rep. Donna Rowland, said Thursday that the new "certificate of driving" has created more confusion and problems that either expected.

The law was designed to provide a way to track illegal immigrants while ensuring that undocumented workers know the rules of the road.

"It needs tweaking," said Ketron, who backed the driving certificate law — the first of its kind in the nation.

"It's far beyond tweaking," said Rowland, who believes legislators should scrap it, go back to requiring Social Security numbers for driver's licenses and dismiss the new two-tiered system.

That was a two-fer -- two euphemisms for "illegal aliens" in one sentence!

Rowland was even more emphatic about problems with the law.

"It was a mistake to implement it. We've just created a mess," she said.

Advocate groups for and against immigrant rights both say the new law is difficult to understand.

"We've essentially given illegal aliens a free pass," said Donna Locke, head of Tennesseans for Immigration Control and Reform. "Illegal aliens have no rights except to be treated humanely as they are deported."(end of excerpt)

------------------------------------------------------------

What your seeing is the initial backlash (and the crying towels will be distributed by the truckload). The line of outraged "Hispanic Community Leaders" will be long outside all the media outlets and representatives' offices.

Rep. Rowland has fought so long and hard for reform that she views this experimental compromise as a failure. This is only her first go-around with our Democrat Machine. She doesn't seem to comprehend the victory she's achieved, for without her unceasing efforts illegals would still be getting licenses.

That's my practical mind talking. My heart knows that both her and Ms. Locke are absolutely right. - NRT

Good luck to Tennessee. They're gonna need it.

If you have nothing better to do, here's Carter's ideas from 1977 on illegal aliens & amnesty. It's long, so I'll just quote one paragraph:

Undocumented Aliens
Message To The Congress
By Jimmy Carter

In the last several years, millions of undocumented aliens have illegally immigrated to the United States. They have breached our nation's immigration laws, displaced many American citizens from jobs, and placed an increased financial burden on many states and local governments.

You're lucky it wasn't a cut and FUTURE error.

Anyhow, great article. It's hard to believe that the brilliant elected officials try to solve problems by creating even worse ones.

Hey, I live in New York and I had to furnish my SSN last week when I renewed my license. It seems that when I originally obtained my license in 1969 a SSN was not required.

Hudson: "Yeah, someone said 'alien,' she thought they said 'illegal alien' and signed up."
Vasquez: "F**k you, man."

Just had my address changed on my license. Lady looked me square in the eye . . . "You don't need proof of insurance" AND they are no longer asking for SS numbers like they used to. Ya know what she was asking for from the bunch (six or seven) in front of me of which exactly two could speak English? A REPORT CARD WITH CURRENT GRADES.

I $&1+ you not.

The state of Texas drivers license is now good for 10 years.

Anybody can get one here. Of course, illegals are not supposed to get them but they do.
