UN Officials Stunned to find Refugee Camp Emptied in Sudan

Sudanese government officials emptied a camp of thousands of refugees hours before UN Secretary General Kofi Annan (news - web sites) was to arrive here Thursday, preventing him from meeting some of the hardest-hit victims of the humanitarian crisis in the province of Darfur.

"There may have been 3,000 to 4,000 people here as of 5 p.m. yesterday," UN spokesman Fred Eckhard said as he gazed upon the empty camp at Mashtel. "Now, as you can see, no one is here. I can't imagine they spontaneously moved."

The forced removal came a day after Sudanese officials promised Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) that humanitarian aid workers would have unrestricted access to Darfur and agreed to other U.S. demands to avoid possible UN sanctions.

Sudanese officials acknowledged they had moved the refugees, but said it was for their own good.

I can't imagine why Sudanese officials would be concerned about UN sanctions. Surely they're not afraid of harsh words on a piece of paper issued by the UN.

They're worried about starting a process that ends with US soldiers demolishing another Arab 'army'.

Hiding the refugees ain't gonna help much to avoid such an outcome, if it comes to that.

The sudan was just preparing the ground for the new UN Headquarters.

My suggestion.

We'll invade Sudan looking for the refugees, dismantle the government, and upon finding mass graves instead of 'displaced persons camps,' be accused by hysterical liberals about misleading the country into an unjust and preemptive war.

The UN has searched extensively for refugees and, having found none, has concluded that refugees do not exist.

Well, whatever happened to those missing refugees, it can't be as bad as panties on the head.

Obviously Bush and his Zionist cronies sent Mossad and Halliburton into Sudan to move the refugees, all in an effort to further humiliate Muslims. [/kook]

They found a couple, but they are not part of a large refugee group and appear to be refugees from prior conflicts.

"Now, as you can see, no one is here. I can't imagine they spontaneously moved."

I bet you can't imagine they were spontaneously killed, either, but that's probably what happened. And as usual, you'll pass a resolution, pat yourselves on the back, and the US will clean up the mess you refuse to acknowledge while you condemn us for "rushing to action" and behaving "unilaterally" instead of "building a coalition."

I suggest a ground-penetrating radar search to find the mass grave.

Yup. There were plenty of bulldozers at the site. And evidence that a very large hole had been dug and recently filled in.

But no clue as to the whereabouts of the refugees. Not a clue.

Yeah. They're also on the U.N. Human RIghts Council. What have they got to worry about?

When is the rest of the world - Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, whatever, going to wake up to the threat that's menacing them from totalitarian Islam?
