June 30, 2004 -- Two security guards working at Iran's U.N. mission were kicked out of the country for spying last week after they were caught videotaping New York City landmarks, authorities said yesterday. It was the fifth incident in less than three years involving Iranian guards.Sources said it occurred early last week when agents of the FBI's foreign counter-intelligence branch followed the two Iranians in Midtown.
The men, members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, a security arm of the Tehran government, were seen videotaping Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick's Cathedral, sources told The Post.
They said the men weren't taking video in a normal manner holding their cameras at eye level but held the cameras at their hips, shielding them under their jackets or otherwise using their bodies to conceal them.
Because Iran had been warned about its guards in previous incidents the State Department decided to expel them for activities "incompatible with their stated duties" which is the polite, diplomatic jargon for spying.

Why didn't we just arrest them... sending them back home doesn't really solve anything... I am glad we got wind of what these guys were up to, but sending them home does nothing to help... what else do they know? I guess we won't know... :\
bump!
There it is: compelling evidence that Iran is casing us out for terrorist acts. It is also compelling evidence that the UN is a den of vipers which makes our nation more vulnerable to terrorist attacks. The UN is a den of vipers. And Iran is a leading viper in that den. We must destroy the mullahs of Iran before that viper bites us-- sooner rather than later. We are blessed, most fortunate to have this advance warning. Failure to act now will reap a terrible price.
As members of the Iranian Embassy, they probably had some degree of diplomatic immunity. Besides, the terrorist-enablers at the ACLU would have had them out of jail in less than 24 hours anyway. After all, the Leftist lawyers would simply argue that these guys were guilty of nothing more than suspicious videotaping.
I say, expel the diplomatic staff, and close the embassies, of all countries involved with terrorism. Why make it easy for them to operate and support their terrorist networks in the US?
Correction: As members of the Iranian UN Mission...
Btw, we need to shut down the UN Headquarters in NYC and kick all those creeps out too!
If America keeps burning bridges and severing diplomatic ties, pretty soon your only contact with other nations will be military ones. No matter how deluded you are about America's military capacity, that would be a very bad situation for you guys and the rest of the world.
Utterly unrelated- I'm getting loads of timeout errors on FR... anyone else notice this problem?
Pretty soon the rest of the world is going to have to see that the ONLY way for international prosperity is for tyranny and totalitarianism, no matter what its form (communism, socialism, Isalmofascism) has to die. As more than TWO THIRDS of the UN is comprised of unelected dictatorships, this is a huge task.
Now, I ask you, is it right for the U.S. to "be friends" with unjust unelected leaders of totalitarian states? (If you don't know that the UN has ALWAYS been a hotbed of international spying, you don't know anything of the history of the world!)
Take your eyes off the U.S.'s flaws and open them really wide to see the true corruption and evil that exists in nations around the world. Like Iran. Like Iraq. Like Sudan. Like China. Like Cuba. Like North Korea.
As you state "your" country, I presume you are not an American?
What country are you from, friend?
Oh... it's America that keeps burning bridges. Ok, now I got it.
For a minute there I thought Iranian spies had been caught red handed AGAIN checking out targets for a possible terrorist attack.
I think the USA response has been mild and diplomatic considering the seriousness of the offence. Remember 9/11 ?
Yeah, parasites of the digestive/intestinal system that feeds off the host organism and gives nothing (but trouble) in return.
Best if they are all totally eliminated to prevent further breeding and you need to carefully wash your hands and food carefully so that you do not pickup further contamination.
An apt description of those folks at the embassy I believe.
Somehow I kept thinking it was about the French....
Oh, yeah, and what do you mean by "no matter how deluded you are about America's military capacity"?
What, are you a Chinese PLA strategist?
Y'know ... I'm taking you very seriously because you guys seem to have lumped all of us into one pot ... like as if we are the great Satan .... and if that is the case, (and you leave no room to interprate your post otherwise), I'm officially asking Jim Rob to further investigate who you are.
I think you're a member of a sleeper cell, here in America and you are my sworn enemy.
Identify yourself ..... or haven't you finished Gest-ating?
Be careful slug ... we may not like it, but abortion is legal here .... with or without bridges.
This guy has been here 6 months and this is his only post.
!
Thanks knarf for sniffing out this scary lurker, who obviously couldn't hold back from making some swipe at our God blessed US of A.
Isn't that the other way around G?
By your argument, Gest, the police should be hosting tea parties for gang bangers and murderers.
And I have no delusions about America's military capacity: we can send any nation, in fact every nation, back to the stone age if that's what they wanted. (Not that it would be necessary to go to such extreme measures. I'm merely pointing out yet another flaw in your argument.) As soon as we leveled one or two terrorist nations, the rest of the world would quickly learn to behave responsibly.
