The Supreme Court wrapped up its nine-month term yesterday, on time, with praise for the administration's retiring solicitor general and no retirement announcements of its own.
The court traditionally ends its term before July 1, and the justices managed to do that despite dealing with major issues late in the year, including President Bush's war on terrorism.

During the next few years, Kerry or Bush will likely be nominating two or three Supreme Court Justice replacements.

Thank the Lord! No more lawmaking from the bench... for awhile anyway. They did more than enough this time to gag a maggot.

I think the Chief Justice likes his work and has objectives he wants to achieve in the federal judiciary. Outside of a bad back, he appears to be in good shape. He has 3 clerks, the other justices have 4.
I get the impression that because of the way the election went in 2000, the justices made a pact not to retire during this first term. Makes sense to me.
