These pictures remind me a lot of those in a series of old books my late Dad had bought/collected. It is titled: "Pictorial History of World War 11". Although the pictures are black and white, the subjects of many of them were terribly sad, and horrible to look at. However, there were many that were touching, and even amusing! The series had a section on the war-time entertainment, and the various comics, singers, and movie and radio stars who went out to entertain the troops!

It has dozens of pictures, articles, and essays dealing with the war as a whole; but individual volumes dealing with certain aspects, such as: different battles, areas of conflict, stateside issues and people, etc.. It also has a section that deals with the various post-war trials of the enemy.

Many of the essays and articles were written by the many military commanders themselves. It's great to see that there is still some plain/non-pc sources from that time, from which these books were written and produced!(1949) These books were published in New York by a company called: WM. H. Wise and CO.,INC..

Now I know how some people feel about the French on "Free Republic". However, after looking at some of the pages and articles in one of these books; I feel that it's unfair to paint all French of that period with a tar-brush! There are some poignant pictures, and some stirring stories about some French people, that didn't just give-up, and surrender! Apparently, there were what was referred to as: "French Patriots"; who came out to fight alongside the Allies.

Another thing they did was to seek out, and punish in their own way, the Nazi collaborators when they found them! In fact, with sympathizers that were women, they forced them to have their hair cut, terribly short! Apparently, it was a way to humiliate them! It may have been an underground group of some sort. But they were anything but cowardly, "Cheese-eating, surrender monkeys"!

After reading this, I feel sad reading some comments, even on this site about "some French people"! But it's equally sad to see them the way they are, in light of their behavior now. It's easy to get angry with some French people, particularly the leaders, and the protestors, now.

But I have hopes that someday, the French people will see what's happening to their nation, before it's too late! There were heroes among them, most of them unsung in recent history. Hopefully, the spirit of those heroes, those valiant fighters and their families, will inspire the people of France, and yes those of Germany, again!

Thanks for the info. 40 killed? No doubt they gave some reference citing names, units and locations so this could be verified. Or did they not?

I am sure 40 guys died after the war was over from wounds inflicted during the war but not from some 'werewolfs' after hostilities. We had enough guys to completely and thoroughly occupy Germany and Austria. There was no real resistance against Americans after Hitler killed himself. The Nazis spent their effort to slow down the Russians.

Check some of this crap out on Snopes. Notice you don't hear Rummmy or Condi keep repeating this stuff. In fact, I heard Wolfowitz say the past week that the Nazis gave no resistance. Equating WW II to Iraq killings is Urban Legend.

Thanks for info, but you will notice that my post said nothing about allied casualties in post war Germany. My post dealt with the program's revelations of Allied responses to the efforts of unreconstructed Nazis to resist the occupation. The use of summary courts martial and firing squads was represented in the documentary. Our forces in Iraq have done nothing in comparison.

Two points: The resistance in Iraq is not truly "post war". Personnel and weapons were left unhindered in our rush to Baghdad. There was little resistance from Iraqi Army, The earliest terrorist resistance was from Fedayeen Saddam. Transforming a war into a guerilla conflict.:

The German population was met with immediate and severe reprisal for any act of terrorism and the population had experienced five and a half years of war with tremendous physical and emotional damage. Combine the two and it's a wonder there was any resistance at all. Iraq experienced six weeks of combat so the idea of a war weary population does not enter the picture.

The program used newsreel and military footage, newspaper articles, and radio broadcasts from the period, along with comments from various experts on the history of the occupation. The micro-specific details you're interested in were not referenced, although there were some references to general locations--towns, for example, where occupying Russian or American forces encountered resistance bombings, sabotage and murders

Check some of this crap out on Snopes.

While Snopes is not a bad site, the notion that it's somehow a determinative historical source for what constitutes fact or fiction is a bit much. They're essentially homsespun reporters seeking to interview informed sources about the accuracy of dubious claims. In the Snopes FAQ the owners themselves describe what they do as a "hobby." They're not a bona fide or accredited historical research organization by any strech of the imagination.

Equating WW II to Iraq killings is Urban Legend.

We could go round and round about the differences between the occupations of Iraq and Germany (xkaydet65's post #23, for example, about why the resistence in Iraq is not taking place "postwar," but merely a transformation of wartime tactics and strategy). The doumentary in question doesn't, nor certainly do I, assert that the two events are analogous in all specifics. That would be silly.

In a broad general sense, however--even if it is true that no American soldiers were killed during Germany's postwar occupation--there remain many instructive historical similarities: sabotage bombings, rioting, looting, reprisals and intimidation against those who assisted the allies, the growing discontent of the American public with the occupation, the widespread belief that it would not be possible to turn Germany into a functioning peaceful democracy, the anger from Germans toward their occupiers, etc.

Only a fool would completely dismiss the notion that there are legitimate historical comparisons that can be made between the occupations of Germany and Iraq.

I had a Marine Corps buddy that sported a Purple Heart he received in WWII in Germany when he was shot by a 12 year old Werewolf.

There couldn't have been too many Marines in Europe during WWII. Embassy guard, ship detachment maybe, but I'm not aware of any Marine units in the European Theater.

You are 100% right. He was on some type of detached duty from a ship. I thought of your point after I had posted the item. Oh well, another day older, etc.

Because of the speed, and the fact that many Iraqi units weren't even really engaged, but rather allowed to melt away, I doubt most Iraqis really felt like they were defeated (in comparison to Germans or Japanese who were bombed here and there, day and night for months/years on end).

That's led to what we call resistance, but really is just a continuation of the war.

"Only a fool would completely dismiss the notion that there are legitimate historical comparisons that can be made between the occupations of Germany and Iraq. "

I agree there are legitimate comparisons but the claim that GI deaths in Iraq had its counterpart in Nazi Germany is not one of them. No one seems to be able to document GI killings so that they can be verified. Verification is a requirement for legitimate historical comparisons.

This entry here is interesting:

MARCH 11, 1946 : (IRAN, KASHRAVI ASSASSINATION BY FEDEYEEN E ISLAM) Iranian scholar Amhed Kashravi stabbed to death by Fedayyan-e eslam guerillas in Iran.

*******************************************************

It's where the infamous Ayatollah Khomeini enters the scene big-time:

Finally, the attack on Rushdie is consistent with other actions by the ayatollah [Khomeini], two of which deserve mention. He took nearly the same step 47 years earlier, when he was yet an obscure mullah. In 1942 he wrote The Discovery of Secrets, a polemic directed against Ahmad Kasravi, a prominent writer whose anti-clerical views had gained a significant following in Iran. Khomeini pronounced Kasravi mahdurr ad-damm (forfeit blood), thus permitting a Muslim to execute him. His book was read by Mohammed Nawab-Safavi, who went on to found a terrorist group, the Fedayin-e Islam, and this group made Kasravi its first target. Inspired by the Khomeini tract, Sayyed Husayn Emami and three others attacked Kasravi with knives, murdering him.-------- "The Ayatollah, the Novelist, and the West," by Daniel Pipes, Commentary, June 1989, http://www.danielpipes.org/article/186

[* My note: This sounds similar to the American terrorist group Jamaat al Fuqra's murder of the moderate cleric out west, in Arizona, I believe...]
