Threatening Calls Flood Embassies of Middle Eastern Countries in Seoul

Embassies from the Middle Eastern countries to South Korea were found to have received many telephone calls from Koreans threatening to kill their people here since a Korean hostage was executed by terrorists in Iraq.

The Iranian Embassy received as many as 20 calls, and embassies of Qatar and Saudi Arabia received about five each, according to officials at the missions.

``We have received 20 phone calls from angry Korean people exclaiming, `I will kill you’ since the Korean hostage accident went public,’’ Iranian Ambassador to Seoul Jahanbaksh Mozaffari told The Korea Times in an exclusive interview on Thursday.

The ambassador continued that it is very sad that the Iraqi insurgents’ criminal act has created this atmosphere here, adding, ``Koreans need to know Iraq from Iran.’’

Other Middle East countries’ embassies in Seoul have also received calls from Koreans criticizing them for the slain Korean hostage.

In fact, public opinion in South Korea has suddenly turned against Muslims after Korean interpreter Kim Sun-il was killed by Iraqi militants in the Middle East country.

``Please, do not link the hideous accident to Islam, Arabs and Muslims,’’ Mozaffari stressed. ``It has nothing to do with those things, and Korea’s negative sentiment toward Middle East countries does not help for Iraqi reconstruction at all.’’

Fortunately, the embassy has not received any reports of mishaps involving Iranian people here and South Koreans upset by the beheading case, the ambassador said.

On the other hand, the diplomat said he fully understands the pain Koreans feel due to the tragedy in Iraq because his country has also experienced similar incidents in the past on numerous occasions.

``A few years ago, all the Iranian diplomats at the Iranian consulate in Mazarsharif, Afghanistan, were killed by the terrorist group Al-Qaida,’’ he explained. ``Our people are also victims of Iraqi insurgents.’’

Meanwhile, the ambassador was concerned that the United States, leader of the coalition forces in Iraq, might make use of this sad event as an excuse to extend their military presence there.

Life-taking incidents are a daily occurrence in the war-devastated country, and the U.S. may take advantage of the worsening security to maintain their forces in Iraq, he said.

``Though our country had a war for years with Iraq, we also feel sympathy for ordinary Iraqi people because they came under the occupation of the U.S. right after they were released from dictator Saddam Hussein.’’

The ambassador made clear his country’s position on the Iraqi situation, saying that the U.S.-led forces in Iraq should be pulled out as soon as possible and the authority transfer be conducted as scheduled within this month.

While in Korea on business, I have only one thing to say for them. The best thing about S Korea is the Koreans. I absolutely love them. They were, to a person, helpful, pro-American (all but a strange bunch I met up with), delighted I came, eager to show me around, careful to be respectful, glad I was interested in them, honestly friendly and supportive.

On an off day, I went to the museum on the Korean War. Column after column listed the 10s of thousands of Koreans who died, along with Americans. It was unreal. The remains of shell hits in the Seoul train station can still be seen.

We hear about the anti-Americanism there, but I say again, when I was there, even the young people were very pro-American. It caught me by surprise.

Of course, this may be changing after a few years, when so much anti-US indoctrination stuff is heard all over the place.
