Similar situation in Pakistan. The solution for Pakistan was to let the US establish 3 major bases and provide military support of the existing government (and nuclear assets) should it begin to fall to the Wahabi radicals.

Hmmm. So how does this fit with the "amnesty" program? In 29 days we're going to see 6000 princes executed?

Hello Mark Felton! Long time no post.....(grin)

The monster created by the ruling class in the Middle East is now loose, and hungry. And it doesn't care if it eats its own in the end.

Any thoughts on what's available to the Saudis to get this under control?

I believe there will b e a different, and surprising endgame in SA..I think that mosy of the Saudi Royal family will just pack up and bug out....leave the place..They've got most of their assets abroad, like Switzerland, and the rest in the kingdom can be wired in a second...There's no point to having billions if you're dead...Once a revolution starts it can't be contained. It has a life of its own..So I think they'll cut a deal with OBL and AQ...and leave

Too many princes spoil the broth.

The Saudi Royal family will be history within 10yrs. The terrorists should have nukes by then. The fireworks, in the US and in KSA, should be spectacular. Hopefully I will have made my $$ by then and living on some island somewhere or deep in the hills of Alabama with my wife, young'ns and my dogs.

The Saudis have created a major mess all by themselves. The royal family has amassed wealth beyond anyones wildest dreams. At the same time they've allowed the average citizen to live in poverty and ignorance. All the while pushing the line that it's Americas fault in the medrassas.

This is nonsense. The entire House of Saud consists of 6000 family members. A tiny minority of those 6000 actively fund Al-Qaida.

Title is extremely misleading--downright false. The story says that some of the 6000 princes still fund Al Qaeda.

Sure, the complete disolution of the House of Saud, and the establishment of a secular democracy.

And the liklihood of this is....? (On a scale of 0-10.)

"...royal family has amassed wealth beyond anyones wildest dreams."

Right, and all they could think of to do with their wealth is to fuel hatred for the countries who have allied themselves to Saudi Arabia and lifted it out of the miasmic round of 'kill, destroy, hate and waste typical to politics in the Middle East.

I expect the royal family is going to be short about 6,000 princes in the very near future.

Any country with 6000 princes is in crises. It only took three to put England in crisis after Henry II (part 2).

"all they could think of to do with their wealth is to fuel hatred for the countries who have allied themselves to Saudi Arabia"

In simplest terms they've directed dissent away from themselves to an enemy outside thier borders.

Clinton knew that the ME was a box of snakes and left it alone. Let's hope Bush can charm them or have the foresight to project what will be a future direction for the world. Bush must find some way to get The United States as a whole behind a strategy that defeats this terrorist threat.

And we thought the cold war was a strategic nightmare where we spent money for decades to defeat communism. Bush must reassert that this War is just that, and it is not a sixty-second sound bite. This will be a long road.

The liberal alternative option is appeasement, in other words what can we do to get "them" to like us. The result, this country will cease to exist as we know it.

you are correct...not all are fully supporting AQ.
As an old middle east hand with experience in most of the countries there, Id have to say the Saudis are buying time and just plan stalling. No Arab wants to be forced to make a desicion. Killing an American isnt a big concern for them but holding on to power is a big concern. It was widely reported that the Saudis went door to door looking for terrorist...I dont believe this for a min.
Until we see actual attacks on their so called religous leaders dont believe a word they say...then and only then can we put a small amount of trust in the royal family.

The entire Middle East is poised to change radically. THIS is why we need to see democracies established, as in Iraqq, to "help" this evolution to democracy in the Middle East happen.

This process will take decades, but it is as historic for the world as WW II.
