TEHRAN (Reuters) - The British naval personnel detained by Iran for entering Iranian waters have left the Gulf area for the Iranian capital Tehran, the Iranian Arabic-language television station al-Alam said Thursday.

"The British detainees have left the Gulf area for Tehran," the television channel reported in a news flash.

It said earlier that Iran was refusing to let the eight sailors and marines, who were intercepted Monday, cross back into neighboring Iraq because it does not recognize the U.S.-led occupation.

Now that they've been released, if they have,
the U.S. and Britain should hit Iran, hard.

It would be a perfect demonstration to these
savages that things really have changed since 9-11.

Oh this is bad news...for the Iranians. God bless the families of these Brit soldiers . Let us hope that Blair has the stomach for the appropriate response.

"They are playing with fire."

I hope so.

BTW, the Seoul press has it that most South Korean citizens are very angry over the beheading of Kim Sun-il and are demanding an ROK military attack against Iraq. For the most part, they disagree with about fifty of their politicians.

"They are being taken to Tehran, they are ne being released."

That's what I gathered before venturing a guess that they are being taken to Tehran to be used to humiliate Britain and held up as some sort of Islamic victory against western culture. ...partly for retribution against the recent British statement about Iranian efforts toward nuclear proliferation, perhaps.

Given the way those soldiers have probably been treated, my guess with sadness is also that the Iranians will be very reluctant to release them.

Breaking news from Sky:

DIPLOMATS WITH SAILORS

Eight Royal Navy servicemen held in Iran have been released into the custody of British diplomats, the Foreign Office has confirmed.

The officials joined the group on a plane as the men were moved from the Gulf area to the capital Tehran.

It is thought they will go to the British embassy in the capital but it is not known when they will return to the UK.

Iran detained the men after their patrol boats strayed into Iranian coastal waters close to the Iraq border.

The Foreign Office said British officials in Tehran had been given assurances the six Royal Marines and two Royal Navy sailors would be freed later today.

Diplomats from the British embassy in Tehran visited the men in the remote south-western town of Bandar Mahshahr where they have been held since their arrest on Monday.

There had been hopes that they would be released yesterday, but the on-off plans for the handover appeared to have hit an last-minute hitch.

The men were pictured on state television blindfolded again, walking in a line along the shore of the Shatt al Arab waterway.

The row threatened to develop into a full-blown diplomatic crisis.

However, authorities in Tehran appeared to have decided that they did not want to escalate the dispute further and accepted the British explanation that the men were on a routine mission when they strayed off course.

Iran needs to release these gents right now. Using them as political fodder is exactly the wrong thing to do.
