ROSENBERG -- An attempt to unload a truck full of marijuana in the dark by shooting out a street light backfired when the gunshots alarmed neighbors who called police.
When officers pulled up to the house in the 1300 block of Texas 36 just outside Rosenberg in Fort Bend County, they found a tractor-trailer containing at least 2,700 pounds of marijuana.
Craig Brady, chief deputy for the sheriff's department, said one man was arrested and several ran away when deputies arrived about 10:50 p.m. Sunday.
"They were trying to shoot a street light out. I guess they wanted to work in darkness," Brady said Monday.
One of the bullets knocked out a light, but Brady said the sounds of gunfire were heard by neighbors, and they called police.
Arrested and charged with possession of marijuana was Reginado Gonzales, 42, who lives at the house.
Brady said police were looking for the other people.
Brady said the marijuana, which was packaged in bales, has a street value of about $1.6 million.
"We're still trying to determined who transported it and who it belonged to," Brady said.
The case was turned over to the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force and remains under investigation.
