I have a policy at my paper. I don't buy the news. If you want to advertise with me, fine. If you don't fine. If you have a story to tell, then I'll tell the story.
One thing I have found is that I am one of the few left who believes this. When I see newspapers with ads on the front page, I cringe.

I always liked the understated Tiffany ad on the front page of the NYT...but I agree that the publicists get away with an awful trashy bit of promotion these days purporting to be news.

I believe the front page and opinions page both should be free of ads....they are too important to be cluttered up with ads.
As for sports, fill the whole dang thing up with ads for all I care (not much of a sports fan...lol).

I have a policy at my paper. I don't buy the news. I have the same policy as a consumer of news.
I refuse to get my news from a source that has a vested interest in selling me something. That's why I have a browser open to FreeRepublic.com all day long.
