WASHINGTON, May 11 -- Several prominent doctors and scientists today criticized President Reagan's new proposal to reduce Soviet and American strategic forces and called instead for a freeze in the superpowers' nuclear arsenals.

When Reagan assumed the presidency, it was my understanding the armed forces and weaponry had been badly depleted by Carter, and Reagan built them up again. Furthermore, Reagan was opposed to unilateral disarmament because that of course meant only the US disarmed, but was interested in bilateral REDUCTION. It was the revitalization of our army, weapons of defense, and the threat of SDI (along with Reagan's charm), that brought Gorbachev to the table.

Are you saying my recollection is incorrect?
