1st Infantry Division Graduates Iraqi Leadership Class, Dedicates Training Center

TIKRIT, Iraq -
Members of the 1st Infantry Division, local dignitaries and other guests were on hand June 10 for an Iraqi Civil Defense Corps Primary Leadership Development Course graduation ceremony.

The class was the first to graduate from the newly opened North Central ICDC Regional Training Center at Forward Operating Base Danger. After the graduation, the facility was dedicated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new facility will also host basic training for ICDC soldiers.

Maj. Gen. John R.S. Batiste, commander of the 1st ID and Task Force Danger, and Brig. Gen. Abdul Kadar, deputy chief of staff of the ICDC, were guest speakers at the event. During his remarks, Batiste congratulated the graduates and thanked them for their service.

"The road to a peaceful and secure Iraq may take some time, but your commitment to law and order and to peace and freedom will make a significant difference in our journey towards this goal," Batiste said to the graduates.

Twenty-four of the 231 graduates were recognized as honor graduates, and were presented certificates.

The coursework consisted of physical training, leadership classes, basic soldiering skills, drill and ceremony and human rights training.

This is how we'll seal the win in Iraq--training Iraqis to handle the bad-guys themselves. It is amazing that only 14 months after we started this operation, we are graduating our former enemies from leader development courses as our allies.

There was a real interesting entry on one of the Iraqi blogsites about how well the new Iraqi police are working. The residents were so pleased with how they handled an operation they said they looked like Americans :o)

Good to see some leadership graduate for the new Iraqi Army. AP reported on April 21st that many of the Iraqi soldiers refused to fight against other Iraqis because they lacked an example in their leadership.

"We have to take a look at the Iraqi security forces and learn why they walked."

The militia violence aggravated underlying troubles in Iraq's new military and police forces — the unfulfilled desire for "some Iraqi hierarchy in which to place their trust and confidence" and a reluctance by Iraqis to take up arms against their countrymen,
said Maj. Gen. Martin Dempsey.

Now they will have a few of their own to lead them into battle against rogue militias.
