Sections of RTP Closed after Railroad Threat

A major section of Cornwallis Road has been shut down between Davis Drive and Miami Boulevard in Durham. Police and the bomb squad officials found two suspicious devices near the Cornwallis Road rail crossing that the bomb squad later identified as smoke bombs. A container of clear liquid was also found at the scene, and is now being tested by authorities. Nearby businesses were evacuated as police continue to search the area for other suspicious items. Two other railroad locations were also targeted: Highway 54 and 55 and Highway 55 and Cornwallis. At all three locations the crossing arms that block road traffic were shortcircuited. At both Cornwallis locations crossing arms were also rigged with fireworks that never ignited. Jumper cables and additional lit fireworks were thrown on the tracks at Cornwallis and Miami Drive.

Investigators have confirmed that the incident is related to some banners that have been placed along two major roadways. Those banners displayed phrases such as "exploitation and greed" "RTP quarantined" and "bring back democracy."

The group is apparently protesting the G8 Summit in Sea Island, Georgia.

Police are looking for three men who were seen driving a white Chevrolet pickup truck with blacked-out tags and a camper shell. The men were wearing hoods and masks.

Durham police expect to reopen the closed section of Cornwallis Road by noon.

Signs hung from I-40 and Durham Freeway overpasses stated RTP was quarantined Thursday morning.

Police say a group of masked men orchestrated the closing of at least three railroad crossings running through RTP by setting off smoke bombs.

Dr. Roger Cannon, of the nearby U.S. Army Research Office, says the impact of the threat was minimal.
"Our facility was not affected at all. The only problem was inconvenience for some of the employees coming to work at that time of the morning. It had about the same impact as a traffic jam or an accident on the road," he said.'
