TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- President Bush's massive grass-roots organization is testing its plan to get out the vote in November, with thousands of volunteers nationwide making phone calls and walking door-to-door to contact voters.

While serving as a diagnostic tool for the so-called 72-hour plan before Election Day, the volunteers participating in what's dubbed as Test Drive 4W will also be registering voters and recruiting more volunteers. As well as campaign volunteers, state Republican parties will be separately testing their grass roots.

"We're concentrating on the most competitive states - the battleground states in 2000 - and there's no better example of a battleground state than Florida," said Bush campaign Chairman Ken Mehlman, adding that Wisconsin, Ohio and Pennsylvania are among the other states that will be a strong focus of this week's events.

This is more important than a bushel of polls.

I hope it is replicated in every battleground state.
