No joke: Al Franken considering a Senate run

By ROB HOTAKAINEN

Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune

May 25, 2004

NEW YORK - No professional comedian has ever been elected to the U.S. Senate, according to Capitol Hill historians, but Al Franken is seriously thinking about trying to become the first.

By the end of next year, Franken said he expects to decide whether to move from New York City to his native Minnesota to take on Republican Sen. Norm Coleman in 2008. If he runs, he would seek to reclaim the seat of his hero and friend, the late Democratic Sen. Paul Wellstone.

"When Paul said something, whether you agreed with it or not, you knew where he stood," Franken said. "And that's a great thing. I kinda like the idea of my running because I think I'm in a position to do that, and it might be for having have been a comedian. You know, I feel like I can say what I want to say."

Franken, interviewed outside a New York skyscraper that hosts his new liberal radio talk show, said his decision will depend partly on the fate of his new show and whether a stronger candidate emerges.

Should be about as successful as his radio show.

. . . . Al Franken says finances are so bad at the Air America liberal talk radio network that he's working for free. Air America's only good news of late has been very early Arbitron numbers showing Franken's midday show doing slightly better than Rush Limbaugh's in New York City among listeners 25-54, a main target of radio advertisers. . . .

His radio show, meanwhile, is giving him an opportunity to further excoriate Bush.

His rants probably would be more effective if he had more than 50 listeners.

As a Minnesotan, the idea of Al Franken running for the Senate sounds about as appealing as how most Ohioans feel when asked about a Jerry Springer candidacy.

Franken is a self-absorbed, bloviating major-league Clymer.

He will not run in a million years.

He appeals only to the rabid hate-filled loonies of the far far left.

Eighty-eight percent of people who have ever heard his name find him to be a repulsive fat troll who was last entertaining sometime around 1978.

(Wellstoneapalooza had far more belly laughs than his failed network sitcom.)

"there's little doubt Franken is hot in Washington's Democratic circles."

If true, this is really sad.

Isn't Air America down to Al Franken and a megaphone in Times Square next to "The Naked Cowboy?"

There are several threads over on DU right now talking about how Franken just "ripped up" Neal Boortz. Apparently, this was just on.

Light travels faster than sound. This is why Al Franken appears merely ugly until you hear him speak. Hes also stoopid..

Franken's show is doing better than Rush's among 25-54 year old males in NYC? Preaching to the choir. Franken's show has given lefty males in NY something to do other than play with themselves.

Stuart Smalley:

I'm good enough, I'm smart enough and-

Van/River Guy:

Shut up you liberal tool!

Smalley:

Now, I don't think that name-

Farley character:

I said: "Cram it up your pie-hole pinko!" You're gonna' be smart enough...TO LIVE IN A VAN, DOWN BY THE RIVER, once that crap-fest you call a talk radio show runs out!

Smalley:

Please, I don't think your negativity-

Van Dude:

I got some negativity for you.

How would like to be thrice-divorced, alimony payments to your disabled whore of a wife, bills up the wazoo and LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER?
