ITHACA, NY--A quarter-of-a-century ago it began as a small group. Now, more than 560,000 members later, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is the largest national lobbying group working for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender civil rights.

It was almost 10 years ago when Brenda Marston, curator of the Human Sexuality Collection at Cornell University's Library first contacted the HRC to encourage the preservation of the group's historical records.

When the HRC celebrated its 25th anniversary in early 2003, it was decided that saving the group's historical records would be worthwhile. After very careful research and consideration, the group recently chose Cornell University as the permanent repository for its historical records, Marston said.

"We wanted a place to organize the documents and have the archives available and accessible to assist scholars and researchers," said HRC Education Director Kim I. Mills.

According to the library Web site (rmc.library.cornell.edu), the goal of the library's efforts with the Human Sexuality Collection is to encourage the study of sexuality and sexual politics by preserving primary sources that are too often lost. The library places a special focus on groups that are excluded from mainstream culture.

HRC's records will be filed in Cornell Library's Human Sexuality Collection alongside many other key gay and lesbian organizations, such as Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), Gay and Lesbian Alliance against Defamation (GLADD) and the Gay and Lesbian Task Force - which has been around since 1973, Marston said.

Before Cornell starting adding the HRC documents to its Human Sexuality Collection, the records were stored in warehouses around the Washington D.C. area. A great deal of material is still in file cabinets and boxes around the HRC office, Mills said. Cornell has received 20 boxes so far full of material and there will be over 100 total stored at Cornell.

"The documents were created in the early days of the organization. They consist of such things as board minutes, photographs, and videotapes," Mills said. "This collection will be a great benefit to students," Marston said. "It will give them a chance to look behind the scenes in a way different than textbooks and learn how such things as the debate about gay marriages was formulated."

With the support of faculty, Cornell has gained the funding to hire a temporary staff person to work with the collection during the year Marston said. "We are going to organize the records, care for them and produce an online guide all in one year."

The collection will have a big impact on students today and in the future. People will be able to understand the broadening struggle for equality, Marston said. "During the past eight or nine years the organization has catipulted into the forefront," Mills said. "This is an important step for the organization. "

Cornell also strives to document personal lives, and last year members of the Cornell University Gay and Lesbian Alumni Association (CUGALA) who helped the Cornell Library purchase a valuable collection of correspondence that chronicles the 50-year relationship between Edward J. Wormley (1907-1995), an award winning furniture designer, and his life partner, Edward C. Crouse (1910-1976), a theatre professor.

A reception and discussion about Cornell's Human Sexuality Collection will take place on Saturday, June 12 from 2-3:30 p.m. in 2B Kroch Library on the Cornell campus. Join curator Brenda Marston for a sneak preview of the HRC records, as well as highlights of the Wormley-Crouse collection, photographs of a gay wedding ceremony held in 1952 and other new treasures.

Who would have thought there were that many issues of "Blue Boy" magazine out there?

I wonder if that is pronounced "Crotch"...

I was at Cornell from 1979-1983. At that time the Human Rights Campaign was strictly an organization to force Cornell to divest from South African companies (which, at the time, was still under apartheid). The only homosexual organization at the time was GAYPAC (Gay people at Cornell).

I do recall that the HRC was 100% successful in this effort. GAYPAC mainly planned parties and was more of a social/outreach group than an activist group.

Apparently, the HRC was either taken over by homosexuals or the HRC was so encouraged by its succcess that it asked itself, "Activism is fun! - we can't quit! What should we do next?"

How convenient to substitute "Human" for the word "Homo" to give the organizations "credibility".

Pushing for licentious sexual activity -- what an ignoble cause! There is nothing uplifting, noble or decent about it -- absolutely nothing to be "proud" of!

Homosexual Agenda Ping - Triple Bagger Alert. Ithaca does indeed seem to warrant the title "City of Evil". So students and scholars and study the history of the "gay" movement. Will they be reading "The Pink Swastika" and "The Hidden Hitler"? Will they read the statistics in the articles on FR? Will they visit homosexuals dying of AIDS who now bitterly regret their lives of misery?

Will these students and scholars be interviewing "ex-gays" and researching the many worthy organizations that help people become cured or saved from homosexuality? Will they research the higher levels of child molestation among homosexuals?

Will they find out about great homosexuals of the past, such as Alexander the so-called Great and his stable/harem of castrated boys? Will they read about the New Guinea natives and their boy sodomy activities and witch-based life of fear and filth?

So the "Gay and Lesbian Task Force" has been around since 1973. They must be the ones who demanded that there be an end to all age of consent laws, as well as the sex and NUMBER of people allowed to marry.

Let me know if anyone wants on/off this (quite busy and sometimes nauseating but very important) pinglist.
