Hot weather brings on a beer drought

May 31 2004 Robin Turner, The Western Mail

THE spell of hot, dry weather has caused a beer drought in South Wales.

Stocks of Tomos Watkin OSB in bottles have been completely exhausted over the past fortnight.

The award-winning old style bitter which is brewed in Swansea has been selling at four times its usual rate.

A massive 48,000 bottles have been sold since the hot weather descended on the region.

While the Hurns Brewing Company which makes the beer normally sells it at a rate of 6,000 bottles a week in the past fortnight the 24,000 bottle per week rate has left officials there staggered.

Hurns' managing director Phil Parry said yesterday , "We have completely sold out of bottles and we did not anticipate it so we're struggling to keep up with demand.

"It is usual to see a bit of an uplift in sales when the hot weather hits but this really has been phenomenal.

"This is the first year we have been supplying OSB in bottles throughout the summer and the sales data seems to indicate that people are stocking up for barbecues at home or at-home socialising as well as enjoying a bottle or two when they're out and about so orders have just shot through the roof.

"The trade seems to still have stocks of the product even though we as a brewery are low on supplies so the good news is all our customers should be OK for the Bank Holiday.

"However we will busy overseeing another bottle run at the brewery to ensure if this good weather continues throughout June we will be able to keep up with demand."

A beer drought is a horrible thing.

I enjoy beer in the summer at night, after a hard day's work.

I found it hard to fathom that anywhere in the United Kingdom would be suffering from a beer drought.

UK beer is very good.

I am curious as to how Wales could suffer a drought of beer.

Couldn't the British emergency response folks just send a train-load or convoy of beer there?

A Shifnal landlord is celebrating after his pub was voted the best in the region by real ale fans - the tenth time in a row it has finished in the top two in the competition.

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, nominated the White Hart as East Shropshire's best pub.

The White Hart, Shifnal Ð voted the best in the region by real ale fans
Now landlord Andy Koczy, who runs the pub with his wife Jane, hopes to win the approval of the experts over Shrewsbury rival The Loggerheads.

Mr Kozcy said: "It is an honour to get this far. The award is voted for by CAMRA members and is purely about the standard and range of the beer.

"We offer seven different real ales at any one time - four regular beers and three guest ales.

"We have a total of 350 guest beers each year from brewers all over the country. In the 10 years we have been running the White Hart we have either come first or second in the competition every year.

"It is nice to be recognised by the local CAMRA group because it is a great vote of confidence from the people who actually drink the beer.

"There is no juke box, no loud music, no television blaring out. It is a good old fashioned pub and it is all about the beer.

"I spend more time in the cellar than I do behind the bar."

He said the first phase of the competition was a straight vote by local CAMRA members. Now the pub will be judged by undercover adjudicators who will decide between Shrewsbury's The Loggerheads and The White Hart for the accolade of the county's best pub.

The pub will receive its award on June 13.

LOL.

Apparently, OSB is not Oriented Strand Board to them.

Good joke, and I thank you for it.

Me thinks the Brewer has seen the US oil companies create a "shortage" and run up the prices...

According to this article, Norway is about to face a beer shortage as well, due to its brewery workers are on strike.
