Memorial Day Weekly Update from Iraq (Good news from the Sunni Triangle)

On this Memorial Day week-end we here in Iraq are thankful to all those military veterans that have gone before us. The United States of America is the greatest country in the world because of the men and women that were willing to sacrifice and serve their country to preserve freedom. Our freedoms are now being challenged by international terrorism and we are proud to defend America. God Bless the Veterans and God Bless America.

Hopefully the national news back home has been positive as the situation here in Iraq continues to improve. The success in Fallujah is undeniable. Foreign terrorists have fled Fallujah because they lost support from the local people. These terrorists have now shifted to other locations like the town of Ar Ramadi and the slums of Baghdad. These terrorists are now staging assignations and bombings in an effort to hamper the transfer of sovereignty on June 30th.

Moqtada Al Sadrs’ attempted revolt has failed. The majority of Iraqi Shias refused to support him and viewed his “militia” as a gang of thieves. By conducting limited offensive operations against Muqtadas’ Militia, U.S. Forces have been able to contain the armed gangs to three cities, Najaf, Karbala and Kufa. During recent weeks the people of these cities have grown angry with the Sadr Militia and began to pressure Sadr to get his gang out of their neighborhoods and Mosques. While causing nightly enemy casualties of 20 to 40 dead, U.S. Forces were able to preserve Holy Shrines in each of the cities. This week Sadr apparently became totally ineffective and it appears the crisis is over.

The progress toward democracy in Iraq took another step forward this week with the selection of Ayed Hashim al-Alawi as Prime Minister of the Interim Iraqi Government. Mr Al-Alawi is a Neurologist who has been living in London since he fled Saddam Hussein’s’ dictatorship in 1990. He is widely respected by most Iraqis and Iraqi political groups. As Prime minister he will lead Iraqi until general elections are held to select the first elected government in decades.

In closing let me say negative news spins aid our enemies; positive news aids American and Iraqi efforts to establish a free Iraqi Government. Please know that for every bad news story that happens over here, hundreds of great things are going on that you will never hear about. Your soldiers are doing a super job. Please stay the course and support their efforts.

Funny...that's what I hear on talk radio.

And I hear the opposite in the mainstrem media.

Which one to trust?
