May 29, 2004 -- WASHINGTON — The woman falsely rumored to have had an affair with John Kerry reveals in a bombshell account to be published next week that she was grilled by Kerry aides who were panicking that the story was about to derail his presidential campaign. Former Kerry intern Alexandra Polier writes in New York magazine that she was "peppered with questions" after her name surfaced in news stories linking her to the Massachusetts senator in February.

In the article, Polier even wonders whether one of Kerry's closest advisers thought the candidate may have been lying when he denied the affair.

I read the whole article. This sounds like a first-hand account by the alleged victim to be printed by the New Yorker and leaked to the New York Post. I doubt the Clintons are this woman's handlers.

I still think there was some "there" there. Why would the father have originally called Kerry a "scumbag" who was caught lusting after his daughter, and then 3 days later the father says he supported Kerry?

Why was she basically in hiding in Africa, and refused all interview requests except her one statement (approved by the Kerry campaign) tersely denying the affair?

Why did Wesley Clarke and his aides know about the intern issue with Kerry, and why was Kerry so nervous about it on Imus?

I have not read this article but give no credence to the rumor.

That said, Bill Clinton said he was not "alone" with Monica. It was another of his "definition of is" moments.

I would think that Kerry's handlers thought that it could be true not because Kerry is a womanizer but because he is a bald faced liar.

The NY Post is one of the more objective and truth telling papers. It is my guess, however, that in order to get the woman to agree to talk to them, they had to say: "The woman falsely rumored to have had an affair with John Kerry."

In an interview with the media, this is called "setting the groundrules."
