The Portland-based Leatherman Tool Group Inc. was ordered to pay consumers more than $13 million after a California judge decided the company's multiuse tools had too many foreign components to be considered made in the United States.
State Superior Court Judge Victoria Chaney ruled that the company violated California law by placing a "Made in USA" label on almost two dozen products that were largely made outside of the country.
She said the label would likely "deceive members of the public into a false belief that the tools are wholly American made."

It is a damn fine tool.
Wait till they find out Tobasco sauce hasn't been "made in America" for years.
I have two; a belt version and a pocket version. I love them.
You aren't kidding. I have one I have carried daily for over two years and the blade is still sharp as a razor and has never been sharpened.
Ok. Where can I get a piece of the action for this "Made In Wherever" tool?
Huh? The bottle in my desk drawer says, "Avery Island, LA 70513." It does not say, however, made in the USA.
The blade won't dull if you don't use it.
Okay...where does Tobasco sauce get made?
I guess when I get an new multi tool I will look at a buck or a gerber.
You mean it's not made by a family in New Iberia,LA like over a hunnert years?.........
Had one, I prefer the Gerber since you can easily open it with one hand.
I bought a Leatherman WAVE 7-8 years ago. It's one of the best investments I've ever made.
Too bad about this, though.
Well, Jethro, I always considered Louisiana a whole nuther country...........
but Leatherface is based in texas.

What are you talking about? I've seen the plant. Did Louisiana secede?
The plant is there...just like Leatherman, they've been importing the peppers for years.
I've been in their plant, and can tell you that much, MUCH of the Leatherman tool is made in the US.
Some of the blades are real specialty jobs, and thus get ground by outside suppliers. I know firsthand that at least some of these guys are U.S. based.
I don't think Leatherman would arbitrarily offshore jobs - they've worked too hard fending foriegn knock-offs to give in without a fight.
