GAY CHANNEL COMES OUT
New York Post ^ | 5/26/04 | DON KAPLAN

May 26, 2004 --

MTV has finally got its Gay TV.

"This was either the worst-kept secret in television or the longest-awaited promise to a very loyal and important television audience," MTV Networks chief, Tom Freston said yesterday.

MTV will launch a gay channel next February on Time Warner cable in New York, Los Angeles and four other major markets.

The ad-supported network aims to appeal to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender audiences who represent about 15 million people and $485 billion in buying power, according to MTV consultant Matt Farber, the executive credited with first bringing the concept of a gay network to Viacom several years ago.

The network will be called Logo.

About 25 percent of Logo's programming will be original — the rest reruns of established shows and movies.

The new network says is has more than 40 concepts in development with sister networks MTV, VH1, TV Land, CMT, Comedy Central, Showtime and even CBS News.

Freston and other network officials were careful not to say which programs it plans to buy.

A full schedule will be released later this summer, they said.

Logo has already secured the rights to broadcast at least 100 movies from major studios, including gay-themed films like "Gods & Monsters" and "Serving in Silence" (a Glenn Close and Barbara Streisand project about a lesbian army officer) and gay-cult favorites like "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"

MTV officials say they are not concerned about sexual content because there won't be any.

All of the programming on Logo will be in line with the broadcast standards that apply to other basic cable channels, Freston said, preparing for the inevitable backlash MTV is likely to get from some conservative organizations.

"This is not a network about sex or sexually explicit content," Freston said.

More sexually oriented fare, such as Showtime's "The L Word" or "Queer as Folk," would likely appear on Logo's pay video-on-demand channel, said Farber. The VOD channel is set to launch in conjunction with Logo next winter.

Freston said the timing of Logo's launch had little to do with the same-sex marriages that are being conducted in Massachusetts and elsewhere.

"The timing is really just coincidence and not part of a grand strategy to ride down the aisle with all these happy couples," Freston said.

"If anything, we wish we had finished our work and made this announcement earlier in the year," he said.

...just like MTV was supposed to be all music, all the time.

Homosexual Agenda Ping - Triple Bagger.

I hate the mass media.

Treasonous, slimey, prostituting themselves for profit at the expense of the minds and morals of everyone unfortunate enough to be reared watching or reading them. Siding with the enemies of all that is good.

Let me know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.

I get quite a kick out of these stories that talk about what a slice of buying power this an a few other groups have. I'd suggest that if those who were not a part of this group would tell the networks to go fly a kite, networks and cable, this noncense would stop overnight.

These folks seem to be saying, screw sensitivites out there, we're shoving this into your home like it or not. Well, there are a lot of advertisers out there who might not like what they could get if decent folks finally said, 'enough is enough!'

Speaking of subsidized liberal losers; Whatever happened to Airhead America? Are they still going? Are they up to ten stations yet? Are they up to a hundred listeners yet?

Let's see if conservatives have the guts, determination, and commitment-to-sacrifice needed to push this homosexual crap off the air. Boycott the advertisers and write them letters telling them why they've lost your family's business.

The homosexuals (a small but extremely dedicated and vocal group), were able to force Dr. Laura off the air. Can we conservatives (a much larger, but consistently less activist group), muster the same muscle and consumer power that they did?

The Left has (once again) thrown down the gauntlet. Do we have the courage to pick it up?

Just about every gay activist that I've heard always claimed that gays are 10% of the population. That would make about 27 million. Now they're claiming 15 million. What happened to the rest?

what viacom will do is "package it" with other channels. Thus if system X wants TVland, or Cartoon Network, or some other popular channel, they will force system X to carry their product. This will also mean advertising exposure to viacom.

Homosexuals will want it included in a group because it will allow them to hide their disgusting lifestyle from their billing records.

It is a ultimately a question of advertisers. We really need to address the myth of economic ability of the homosexual. There is no way homosexuals exert that much viable economics. Especially with their high and early mortality and their high need for medical care as a result of sexual diseases.

Will those who advertise on a homosexual based channel loose business. Pier One uses a homosexual, big negative for my dollars.

The most objectionable aspect of this whole obscenity is that is being marketed as a BASIC channel. Any other SEX Behavior Channel (playboy, spice, etc) is a separate pay channel. This is not for basic, if someone wants this let them pay extra and have it live or die on its own subscriber demand levels. (probably because there is not enough homosexuals to support this and thus they are marketing the homosexual freak show to children ala mtv)

Will there be guards and warnings to keep this away from children? We are talking about a lifestyle of a sexually explicit nature? This is right up there with the new more activist FCC.

only a truly P-whipped man would allow a woman to make him pay extra for a homochannel in the home.

What about Mommie Dearest or Valley of the Dolls? You can't have a gay channel without those movies!

The key is to be "reasonable" keep it off basice cable offerings. "REASONABLY" make it a pay extra, extra channel.

It should be no different that ordering the playboy channel or some other sex channel.

To put the homsoexual channel on any basic grouping is to impose it on families.

Viacom got into a pissing match with DishTV. The question is wheter viacom will force systems put it on or loose TVland, MTv, Cartoon Channel, etc.

Time to start writting to comcast, dish and directTV.

Anyone have email addresses?

It would probably also be effective if subscribers would cancel service from companies like Comcast and Adelphia, which have agreed to carry this bilge.
Adelphia now carries pay-per-view porn, too.
This never would have happened if Rigas still ran Adelphia.
They are also providing health benefits for same sex significant others.
Isn't that special?

The results for the 27 million were calculated the same way Democrat votes were tabulated in Florida 2000.

They already have Bravo. This will just dilute the audience for Bravo. The actual audience, if every homosexual turned in would be closer to 6 million max, since the actual number is nearer to 1-2% of the population.

Why do there seem to be more? Vocal and lots of disposable income since they have no kids to support. Also in show business which amplifies their influence.
