Georgia Senate Candidate Gets Pro-Life Endorsement, Isakson Criticized

Atlanta, GA (LifeNews.com) -- Georgia Congressman Mac Collins has garnered the endorsement of the National Right to Life Committee, in a move his campaign says shows he is the most pro-life candidate running for the Republican Senate nomination.

In a letter, National Right to Life PAC said, “During your twelve years in the U.S. House of Representatives, you have given strong and consistent support to right-to-life legislation."

"Your exemplary pro-life record should earn you the support of all Republican primary voters who are concerned with the right to life and with the protection of the most vulnerable members of the human family, including unborn children," the letter read.

“I am honored to earn the endorsement of the National Right to Life PAC,” Collins said. “The pro-life issue is very serious."

Meanwhile, Collins and pro-life Senate candidate Herman Cain, former president of Godfather's Pizza, are criticizing one of their main competitors, Rep. Johnny Isakson (R).

The two say Isakson, who has been saying he is pro-life in campaign speeches, was wrong to have voted for a Congressional measure this week that would have allowed abortions at hospitals on tapayer-funded U.S. military bases.

Isakson voted for a similar pro-abortion proposal last year while Collins has repeatedly voted against it.

"Here Rep. Isakson goes again, saying one thing and doing another. How can he say that he is pro-life in every speech and in all of his campaign literature and then turn-around and vote to allow military abortions overseas again," Cain asked.

Isakson's frequent votes backing abortion has earned him support from the pro-abortion group Republicans for Choice.

"I have a deep respect for life, and a voting record that reflects that respect," counters Isakson on his website.

While Isakson has voter for some pro-life legislation, his voting record also shows some instances where he has differed with the pro-life community.

In addition to the military abortion vote, Isakson voted against President Bush's Mexico City policy and for the use of taxpayer funding to research abortion drugs such as RU-486.

The Concerned Women of America's PAC has also endorsed Collins. Despite the endorsements from leading pro-life groups, Cain says he too is pro-life -- though he is viewed as less likely than Collins or Isakson to win the primary.

"I understand that life is sacred. We must do everything in our power to protect innocent life, here in the United States and overseas," Cain said.

National Right-to-Life can always be counted on to pick the establishment choice.
