Watched the veterans' parade yesterday (NYC). It was pretty sad in a way. Nobody lined the street and even in the one reviewing stand, only a handful of people watched. In another way, it was glorious, as gray-haired vets stood tall and marched with proud, firm strides, cadence count and all. Marching bands played the familiar marches. A group with the banner "Rainbow Cadets" appeared, including a contingent of young drummers doing fancy steps while they just beat the heck out of their drums. You couldn't watch without a big grin.

In his book Christians in the Marketplace, Bill Hybels says that people outside the faith often say, "Show me" before they say, "Tell me."
I knew a young man in Germany named Wolfgang who modeled Hybels' principle at a building site where he worked. As an enthusiastic believer, Wolfgang always read his Bible during lunch. Though his fellow workers jeered, he didn't stop his daily reading. He simply prayed for a way to demonstrate Christ's love to them.
When the workers went home at night, they always left their muddy boots behind. Wolfgang began staying late after work to clean their boots. The men were puzzled at first but then realized that Wolfgang was the only one among them who would perform this humble service. Not only did they come to respect him, but sometimes they even asked him to read the Bible to them. Only eternity will reveal the full effect of Wolfgang's shining life. But this we know: When his co-workers saw his good works, they started listening to his God.
Jesus said, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may . . . glorify your Father in heaven" (Matthew 5:16). If you long to lead the people around you to Jesus, radiate His love by doing practical deeds for God's glory alone. —Joanie Yoder

Hook the rubber band over your little finger, then close that finger against the heel of your hand.
Now stretch the rubber band around your thumb, and out to your pointing index finger. Carefully position a loop over the tip of your finger. Everybody in position? Good!
Now, keeping in mind that the released rubber band will acquire some tangential velocity in whipping around your thumb (Allow for WINDage), aim your pointing finger slightly down and to the left of the target (if you are right-handed).
For practice, aim at a spot on the ceiling over your head, and release the rubber band by moving your little finger away from its contact point. Accurate shooting will allow easy retrieval of the ammunition.
After sufficient practice, select your targets with care -- and celebrate rubber band day!
I think that is why Jen didn't really want to tell us it was rubberband day.

It was six feet long and a bear to load. The range depended on the diameter of the tube used. I'd cut tubes into rubber bands. A 1 ft band (trailer tire tube) cut 2 inches wide would lob out to 300 ft with no wind. The barrel was a lawn timber with a notch cut on one end and slot with wooden dowell landyard operated trigger on the other end. A 2X4 carriage with lawnmower wheels and elevation was adjustable. I later modified it to be more like a slingshot with the tube secured at one end. Golf balls can be very destructive!
