Grand jury to consider case against PDX lawyer jailed in Madrid bombing

An Aloha man being held as a material witness in the Madrid, Spain, train bombings is expected to testify in a Portland federal courtroom before a grand jury Tuesday.

Brandon Mayfield is a lawyer and former Army officer who converted to Islam when he married his wife about 16 years ago.

Federal law officials say Mayfield's fingerprints were found on a bag they said contained detonators in the train bombings. Nearly 200 people died that March eleventh and more than two-thousand were wounded.

But a Spain newspaper is reporting that it was one fingerprint found connecting Mayfield to the bombings. Spain authorities are questioning whether the print even belongs to Mayfield.

Mayfield was taken into custody Thursday by FBI agents, who also searched his home.

The 37-year-old had not been charged with any crime as of Tuesday morning.

If the grand jury does not indict him, Mayfield could walk free.

Mayfield’s family got a chance to visit him for the first time since he was taken into custody last Sunday.

His mother, visiting from Kansas to help Mayfield’s wife and children, said Brandon told her he is hopeful he’ll be out of jail within a week but he also understands the legal process can take time.

If the grand jury does not indict him, Mayfield could walk free.

Are reporters really this dumb?

Of course he will "walk free" if he is not indicted!

I got this email from Lars Larson. More of it is probably on his website. www.larslarson.com

From the Wall Street Journal’s Best of the Web

Vera’s policies on terrorism have madeOregonfamous again

From Madrid to Portland
The FBI has arrested aPortland,Ore., lawyer in connection with the March 11Madridbombings, the New York Times reports.Brandon Mayfield is being held as a"material witness" rather than a suspect, but "officials confirmed Thursday night. . .that Mr.Mayfield's fingerprints matched prints found on a bag in the wreckage of theMadridbombing." Mayfield is an American citizen and Muslim convert.

Why isPortlandapparently such a magnet for jihadis? Last August Maher Hawash pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges. As the Washington Post reported at the time, "In return for his promise to testify against six other Portland-based suspects accused of plotting in 2001 to wage war against theUnited States, federal prosecutors dropped more serious terrorism charges against Hawash."

Could this all have something to do with the Portland City Council's decision in November 2001 to refuse cooperation with federal terror investigations?

What, through the governor's office? Or is it legislature driven?

I didn't hear the details, if there were any.
It was a quick blurb.
You would think it would be easier, and less costly,
if they would just cooperate with the Feds, though.

Hearing set for Ft. Lewis soldier accused of aiding al Qaida

05-11-04
FT. LEWIS - A military hearing is scheduled tomorrow at Fort Lewis for National Guard soldier Ryan Anderson who is accused of trying to give information to al-Qaida.

The preliminary hearing will determine whether Anderson will face a court martial.

He is charged with attempting to give terrorists information about troop strength and tactics, as well as methods for killing Army personnel. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

Army investigators say Anderson gave information to undercover agents, believing they were part of al-Qaida - sketches of tanks and a computer disk that included his passport photo, weapons card and military I.D. card.

The 26-year-old Lynnwood man was arrested in February as his Fort Lewis tank crew was preparing to be deployed to Iraq.

Anderson is a 2002 Washington State University graduate who converted to Islam in college.
