Boy raised as a girl suffered final indignity

WINNIPEG -- Most of David Reimer's tragedies have been well-documented: how his penis was burned off during a botched circumcision, how doctors tried surgery and hormones to make him a girl and how the experiment went horribly wrong.

But only his friends knew the 38-year-old Winnipegger was agonizing over yet another personal catastrophe in the months before he committed suicide last week.

Mr. Reimer was distraught after losing at least $65,000 in an investment scheme last year, friends say. "He was crying on my shoulder, because he said they're not worth the paper they're written on," one said.

The Manitoba Securities Commission issued a warning in November about Gary Perch, who ran the shop where Mr. Reimer worked.

"Gary Perch has been soliciting money from the public to invest in his Winnipeg-based pro golf shop," the statement said. "If you have invested your money with him, your money may be at risk."

Mr. Reimer's wife recently hired a lawyer to recover about $65,000 that seems to have gone missing, said author John Colapinto, whose book about Mr. Reimer's bizarre medical ordeal made him famous.

"What an absolute horror," Mr. Colapinto said. "One has to wonder if this didn't contribute to his despair."

Mr. Colapinto had believed that Mr. Reimer was financially comfortable, because he gave him half the proceeds from his book As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised A Girl.

"David made a wad of money on the book and movie options," Mr. Colapinto said.

But people who knew Mr. Reimer from his days at the Transcona Golf Club in the eastern suburbs of Winnipeg said the boyish handyman was often short of cash.

The club kept him busy washing windows, changing light bulbs and scrubbing the bathrooms, they said, but he often talked about hunting for a weekend job to supplement his income.

"He didn't have money to feed the family," said Brian Andrews, a member of the golf club's board of directors.

"So what the members did was we put together $800, I think it was, for food."

Mary Mogg, 64, remembers giving him leftovers after she finished her shift at the clubhouse.

"He'd have a pot of soup if we made it, and at the end of the day he'd take it home," she said. "I think he appreciated it."

The indignity of poverty was just one of many cruelties Mr. Reimer endured.

The trouble started eight months after he was born in 1965, when he went for a routine circumcision at a hospital in Winnipeg.

The regular surgeon wasn't available that day, so a general practitioner tried the operation herself. Something went wrong while she was using an electric cauterizing machine, which produced a puff of smoke around Mr. Reimer's genitals.

"I heard a sound," said a witness quoted in Mr. Colapinto's book, "just like steak being seared."

The boy's penis was so badly burned that it dried up and fell off. His family eventually asked for advice from John Money, a well-known sex researcher at Johns Hopkins University hospital in Baltimore, Md.

Dr. Money had theorized that gender depends on how a child grows up rather than genetic coding, and the burned child with a twin brother offered a chance to prove it.

The doctor oversaw a series of procedures that cut away the boy's remaining genitalia and gave him female hormones. His parents started calling him Brenda.

But Mr. Reimer never felt comfortable being female, and when he learned about the accident at age 15 he rebelled against the experiment and began acting like a young man.

He renamed himself David, after the Bible story, and began more surgery to remove his breasts and create an artificial penis from muscle and cartilage.

For years, he quietly tried to live a normal life in Winnipeg. He worked a series of menial jobs and got married to a woman named Jane.

His hobbies included fishing, camping, antiques and collecting old coins.

"He absolutely loved Elvis," his eulogy stated.

When he went public with his story in the mid-90s, it forced sexologists to re-evaluate their practices, said Ken Zucker, psychologist-in-chief at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto.

"His legacy is that his case has encouraged a lot more research," Dr. Zucker said.

Mr. Reimer committed suicide May 4. His family has not released the cause of death.

At his funeral yesterday, his father, Ron, just shook his head when asked whether he wanted to talk. His mother, Janet, leaned forward with tears in her eyes and whispered: "He was a hero. He showed the doctors. He was a worldwide hero."

I read the Colapinto book, and I saw David on TV. To compound this tragedy, his twin brother Brian died two years ago. The Reimers have lost both their children.

The beginnings of Socialized medicine in Canada. No accountability, how the hell does this thing work, hey I got a theory, let try it out on some poor kid...

I think of David Reimer almost every day, as I observe my children (boy 7, girl 3). Anyone who doesn't know that sex characteristics are part of our fundamental makeup is, at best, an utter fool. The only possible excuse is that one has not had children to raise, but such a person is far too naive to be credible as a "researcher" in this field.

David Reimer was the victim of a terrible accident as a child, but this accident was compounded by ignorance masquerading as enlightenment, borne of a fantasy view of human nature.

The book describes abuse of those children-both David AND Brian-at the hands of John Money that boogle the mind. Excellent, outrageous book. According to a different article posted at today's AZCentral website, Brian was schizophrenic, and his death is believed to be a suicide. I can't help but wonder what role the 'experiment'played in his later emotional illness and possible suicide.

Sounds to me like the cause of death is quack medicine + people messing with his head all of his life.

A good example of why circumcision should be banned as common practice. If parents elect to circumcise that's different. Modern medicine knows there is no reason for this practice, only cultural preasure.

Cold comfort to the Reimers, but David's tragedy has led to reforms of the whole 'sex-reasignment' procedures. It is highly unlikely that any other little boy will ever go through the hell David went through.

"David made a wad of money..."

A perhaps unfortunate choice of word, given the circumcisionstances.

According to the Colapinto book, there may have been as many as 100 other circumcision-related accidents causing permanent damage to, or loss of, genitalia. It's been awhile since I've read the book, but I remember being stunned that there were so many, though that was over a few decades IIRC.

This guy thought he was God. The gp thought she was too. I wonder if they've figured out they're not, yet? Poor guy.

I read the book. This medical and personal disaster was a legacy of those who tried to deny that there was anything about the brain that was male or female. The doctor tried to use his "experiment" as proof that being male or female was only a matter of nurture, not biology.

If it were female circumcision it would be banned regardless of what parents want, as it should be. Having reached the point in life at which I no longer give two hoots what people think, I have made known to anyone who asks me that I think circumcision is a barbarian practice. I have asked members of my own family how on earth they can claim to believe in an omnipotent, infallible God and yet believe that every young boy he created is in need of improvement via the knife of a surgeon. There is NO justification for male circumcision.

At least what happened to David Reimer will never be repeated, not in North America at any rate. And John Money has been deservedly discredited.

Dr. Money was not a Canadian doctor, but rather a "sex expert" practicing in Baltimore, MD. Money is the one who played around with Reimer's "gender identity" for a years.

Circumcision "accidents" happen in the US, too. I've known two women whose infant sons were mutilated by circumcision.

I didn't know the brother had died.

A lot of tragedy for one family.

It's time for me to kneel and thank God for what I have.

In general I agree. Circumcision as done by Orthodox Jewish rabbis (the "mohel") doesn't seem to produce these horrific accidents, probably because the mohel uses a very sharp knife, cuts off only the loose tip end, and does it eight days after birth (at a time when the boy's blood clotting starts to kick in.)

There are sometimes reasons to do it if a boy is having problems, but then the boy goes to a urologist (NOT a GP, for crying out loud!), has full anesthesia, good followup, etc.

What makes the case so infuriating is this : David had a condition called phimosis (I think that's what he had) . Anyway, the parents took him to a specialist, who recommended circumcision. And then Brian developed the same condition. So the Reimers took both boys in, the accident occured...And a few weeks later, the uncircumcised Brian's condition cleared up on its own. As David's most likely would have, if only...

You know of TWO boys who suffered this !?!?! It must be far more common than people realize-though hopefully a case as extreme as David's-total loss of the penis-is rare, at least.

I wonder if Brian's mental illness wasn't caused at least partly by what Money did to both children, as well as growing up in a household that most have been full of stress. The poor Reimers!

My favorite is when I hear women say "eww. I would never.... with an uncircumcised male."

Yet you could tell that same woman her boobs are too small, she should have them enlarged, and she would be offended.

Another one: "Oh, but it's unclean" - How many UTIs and yeast infections and vaginal problems do girls get compared to an uncircumcised male? As an infant it's a bit more care to clean up while in diapers, but that's still not justification for the practice.

This is a form of sexism that is practiced upon men and it should shop.
