US Muslims' Harrassment Complaints Up
Associated Press ^ | 5/3/04 | RACHEL ZOLL

A U.S. Muslim civil rights group last year received its largest number of complaints that Muslims were being harassed at work, in school and in their communities, a new report found.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations said it received 1,019 claims of physical and verbal attacks on Muslims; on-the-job discrimination; and racial profiling by law enforcement.

In 2002, the organization received 602 such complaints.

The report cautioned that the jump partly reflected an increase in the number of regional offices opened by the Washington-based advocacy group, which allowed more cases to be documented.

The council blamed continued fear among Americans following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and rhetoric that demeaned Islam and depicted Muslims as enemies of the United States during the war on Iraq.

It also blamed misapplication of the USA Patriot Act, the anti-terrorism bill which the Bush administration has defended as critical to national security. The civil liberties restrictions in the bill disproportionately hurt Muslims, the council said.

The full report will be presented at a news conference Monday at the National Press Club in Washington.

California saw the largest number of complaints, at 221, followed by New York at 191, Virginia at 69 and Texas at 57.

Reports of beatings and vandalism on Muslim-owned property more than roughly doubled to 93 last year. In Virginia, a Muslim woman who was wearing a veil was stabbed after being called a "terrorist."

While American Muslims continued to complain of harassment in airports, these claims dropped by about half, to 41. The decrease likely reflected a partial easing of the intense scrutiny of Muslims immediately after Sept. 11, the report said.

School complaints increased from 42 to 71, including several reports of anti-Muslim literature being distributed on campuses.

The organization wants Congress to hold hearings on post-Sept. 11 civil rights abuses and enact laws that would protect Muslims and others from harassment by police and employers.

Ok...I agree, maybe this is going a bit too far.

"The council blamed continued fear among Americans following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and rhetoric that demeaned Islam and depicted Muslims as enemies of the United States during the war on Iraq."

Gosh, I don't know, maybe we just see that muslims all over the world are treacherous, totalitarian fascists, who have entered the bloodstream of this country and we don't want to lose our country like France and England are losing theirs.

I was just thinking about those blood thirsty Arabs who killed a pregnant women and her four children, and rejoiced about their "successful" operation. I thought, if we lose this war against Islamism, then the other 1 billion muslims will rise up with their ummah (brotherhood), and our civilization will descend into a very dark Islamic age that could last for hundreds of years.
Just a thought.

Since most of them aren't from the USA in the first place, I'll believe there is a serious harassment problem when they start returning home. That would be the case if Americans found they were being harassed in some foreign country, they'd be less likely to be relocating there and many would decide to come home. Just staying and whining doesn't prove much of anything --- it only proves it's not very bad here.

How awful for them. Their feelings must be terribly hurt.

How many complaints did the Saudis receive about harassment of Christians?

(Probably none -- it's against the law for Christians to complain.)

Methinks more like thousands of years. If we can't stop it now, how will it be stopped then?

Hard to feel sorry for a people who never repudiated 9/11.
Had they said something...ANYTHING, I would be more open to hear this whine.

But I hear about muslims burning down entire Christian villages, killing families in Israel and celebrating the fact...

If I go on, I'll have my post pulled. I'll just say I have NO sympathy for these animals anymore.

They are being treated much, much better than the Blacks were in some parts of the United States only a few years back. I used to be somewhat afraid of Black people. No more. Now, I am afraid of Muslims.

If more Muslims would stand up and decry the actions of a few, it would be different.

But they don't, for some reason.

Muslims in recent years have done more for the advancement of other minorities than any other group or individual I can think of.

"It also blamed misapplication of the USA Patriot Act....."

The justification goes back much farther than the Patriot Act.

In 1892, the NYSSC ruled that islam was essentially illegal in the U.S. and was NOT to be afforded any consideration as a "religion" as per the First Ammendment. In fact, the ruling also stated that islam (not individual moslems, but islam) was "to be harassed." So CAIR is free to pack up any old time and slink back to their own sharia-dominated country whenever they want to.

I for one am sick and tired of moose-limbs barging their way into our country and using our freedoms to destroy our freedom.

You are so right!!! Just think if, God forbid, there is another attack on our US soil... there would be no where that these idiots could hide. Better they get on board, and make a choice or leave, and quit *itchin'. Stay well!
