[history]
A City Council member who was blasting the Bloomberg administration's social-promotion policies sent out two press releases containing spelling and grammatical errors.
The first release - sent Tuesday afternoon from the office of Councilwoman Margarita Lopez - asked, "Why is [sic] Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein ignoring the fact that the test is flawed and discriminatory?"

Do you think Miz Lopez would recognize a grammatical mistake if she saw one? If so, then she needs to proof-read her material before letting it out for others to see.

(Letz Awl Selebrayte Diversitee Now!) Spellings like those above would not be so bad. They are phonetic and show that the writer actually got some useful education. More common is what looks like random agglomerations of letters because the writer does not have any notion of a connection of sounds to letters.

"I take total responsibility . . . The member of my office who committed the mistake is going to be protected by me, the same the way that I protect the children of the City of New York," she said. Presumably that means the staffer will be given an A+ certificate in spelling and a bumper sticker for their parents saying that theyre an honour student.

I recall the pamphlet issued in Houston by the same education types that famously misspelled many words, including the name of the Houston mayor "Lee. P. Brown". I will always think of the ex-mayor as Lee (Period) P (Period) Brown, as talk show host Jon Matthews always called him after that.

"random agglomerations of letters because the writer does not have any notion of a connection of sounds to letters" Oh, you mean like the players names in the NFL?
(no offense, but I couldn't pass up your comment. I usually get my biggest laugh of the year on NFL draft day)
