(CNSNews.com) - Members of a black activist group are criticizing Rev. Jesse Jackson for equating the military operation in Iraq with "murder" and for claiming that the U.S. military is committing "a crime against humanity."
Jackson's statements were first brought to national attention by the National Legal and Policy Center, a conservative watchdog group that is urging Coco-Cola to stop making six-figure contributions to Jackson's organizations.
"This is another partisan shot by Jackson to gain media spotlight by capitalizing on the unfortunately (sic) deaths in Iraq. Throughout history, there has not been a more concerted effort to stave off civilian casualties," said Project 21 member Geoffrey Moore in a statement.
"The real problem is that the insurgents, terrorists and Saddam loyalists do not care about civilians and are more than willing to use them as human shields," Moore said.
In comments made before and during a speech at the 21st Century Black Massachusetts Conference in Boston on April 3, Jackson condemned U.S. efforts to remove Saddam Hussein from power and also encouraged the United Nations to sanction the U.S. and consider the use of military force, the Boston Herald reports.
Jackson called the military operation "a crime against humanity" and said Iraqi deaths resulting from the actions of U.S. forces are "murder."
"I'm not sure the U.N. has the power to act against us in a military way, but they have the right to make a moral judgment," Jackson said. He called on Congress to determine if President Bush's war policies are impeachable offenses, but said Congress bears no responsibility for the war, despite having voted to authorize it.
"Jesse Jackson's motives have never been as transparent as they were with these statements. If anyone needs to apologize, it's him," said Project 21 member Michael King in a statement.
"He indulges his fantasies and delusions of grandeur by calling for Bush's impeachment and calling for United Nations action against us. But blacks are beginning to see the truth - that Jackson's bluster is exactly that: all smoke and no substance," King said.
"I find Reverend Jackson's comments to be shocking and inciteful. His argument that the 'United Nations should consider sanctioning the United States for its decision to murder all of these people on faulty information by waging war in Iraq' is offensive and harmful to the men and women that serve in Iraq," said Project 21 member Karen Alston in a statement.
"Our nation is at war with an enemy that is sworn to destroy our way of life," Alston said.
Project 21 member Reverend Steve Craft turned the tables on Jackson and chastised him for his extramarital affair.
"To whom is Jackson accountable for his personal atrocities with strange women? Who is going to be his judge and jury concerning his immoral judgments? He needs help to get the log out of his own eye before attempting to get the splinter out of the President Bush's. He is in no position to pass moral judgment on anyone," said Craft.
"I don't recall Reverend Jackson going to Iraq and holding a press conference denouncing Saddam for killing the Kurds with those chemical weapons that people on his side say don't exist," said Project 21 member Bob Parks in a statement.
"I don't remember Jackson speaking out against the 'rape rooms' Hussein and his cronies used for intimidation as well as personal entertainment," Parks said.
"In order for Jackson to be happy, things would have to be as they were before Saddam was removed. Unlike his predecessor, George Bush sent in troops who succeeded in removing Saddam, not lobbing cruise missies that killed more civilians while sparing the tyrant. I don't remember Jackson criticizing Clinton's drive-by diplomacy," added Parks.

Has Mr. Parks coined a phrase here?
The true liberals, of all skin colors, condemn Project 21 as a right-wing group. I read posts on a pc help forum by a black man that said, "If you care about the poor and the environment, you'll vote democrat." He also said he sees John Kerry as the next Abraham Lincoln. Liberals on the same thread all chimed in with their agreement.
Black conservative ping
If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)
Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.
I am starting to think that Jackson has a "martyrdom" wish. It's almost as if he is hoping someone may try to do him harm so he can claim he is a martyr. This guy is nuts.
Sounds like treason to me....
How could they forget to mention that Mike is host of "Truth, Justice and the American Way" on Rightalk/RadioFR? Heheh...
I'm supposed to get another phone call after while to confirm...
Same game, different war.
Jackson never denounces military action by our enemies as murder, only those of America.
