British protesters attack French Far-Right leader Le Pen's car

MANCHESTER, England -- Angry demonstrators emptied a garbage can on the car of French far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen on Sunday after he spoke in support of the anti-immigration British National Party.

Shouting "Nazi scum, off our streets!" about 100 demonstrators slowed Le Pen's car as he tried to leave a hotel in Altrincham on the outskirts of the northern city of Manchester.

Le Pen, who has been convicted of racism and anti-Semitism at least six times in France, was appearing at two British National Party events Sunday despite some demands that he be barred from the country.

At a news conference in the hotel in Altrincham, the leader of the anti-immigration French National Front party gave his backing to the British party ahead of June elections for the European Parliament.

As Le Pen and BNP chairman Nick Griffin met in a hotel, anti-fascist demonstrators gathered outside, angrily shouting slogans such as "Fascist scum, never again!" "Hitler, Griffin and Le Pen!"

Inside, Le Pen expressed mild surprise at the feeling his visit generated.

"I've walked about freely in Iraq and Turkey, in Malaysia and Indonesia," he said. "I don't see why I shouldn't be able to walk about freely in England."

He said the BNP and his National Front recognized what he said was a threat to Europe from immigration originating in the developing world.

"If this phenomenon is not stopped, our populations will be subjugated," Le Pen said.

When Le Pen's car began to pull away, the demonstrators emptied a large garbage can over the car and kicked and pounded it.

Home Secretary David Blunkett said Friday Le Pen was free to visit Britain despite calls from legislator George Galloway and others that he be barred.

"If he fosters hate, if he causes a disturbance or public disorder, then the police will take appropriate action," Blunkett said.

A French court earlier this month convicted Le Pen, 75, of "inciting racial hatred" for disparaging remarks against Muslims made in a newspaper interview. He blames immigrants, especially from North Africa, for high unemployment, and wants to deport all illegal immigrants and tighten border controls.

I think the more that people protest LePen, the more popular he gets. As it is said "Bad publicity is better than no publicity."

I think you're right.

I haven't made up my mind as to whether or not that's a good thing. It's really a sad day when I even have to ask if a racist war criminal would do a better job than the ruling parties in a country.

The BNP is nothing but a bunch of nationalist yahoos, but the people that attacked Le Pen are even worse: hardcore Marxists and Anarchists.

Judging by the names of the spokespersons earlier opposing the visit, I'll bet most of those 100 were muslims.

With respect. For the benefit of those (scholars and gentlemen) who would wish to decide for themselves in certain matters I would post the following.

British National Party can be got on Google. I would suscribe handsomely if I had to, for this search engine.

".....approach and read (for thou canst read) the lay graved on the stone....." (Thomas Gray's elegy).

Edmund Burke or Voltaire said it best though. I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death, your right to say it".

hrmn...
so hard to discriminate between information, disinformation, other disinformation, misinformation, etc...
hard to tell who the white-hats are.
let me rephrase that - I *know* who some of the black-hats are, the trick is to see if there are any white-hats at all.

Fair comment, well put. Saw minor violence portrayed on BBC overseas T/V this evening- Canadian Cable. One handsome older woman went to the ground. Hurt me to see it. Police very active, just doing a nasty job to keep order. Tonight we have a film "Chariots of Fire" - an account of "noble" atheletes, winning for Britain- Olympics of 1924.

Simpler times indeed- history may judge better though. - cheers.
