Three held in McKinney slayings

McKINNEY – Police arrested three men Friday in connection with the slayings of four people last month at a McKinney house.

Police said a tip from a confidential informant led police to arrest Jecory May, 22, of McKinney, Calvin Walker, 28, of Dallas and James Jones, 33, of McKinney. Each man is charged with four counts of capital murder, with bail set at $4 million.

"Right now, we believe we have the three trigger people in custody," McKinney Police Chief Doug Kowalski said during a news conference late Friday night. He added that the investigation into the slayings of Rosa Barbosa, her nephew Mark Barbosa and his teenage friends Austin York and Matthew Self, was far from over.

Investigators are still working to find a link between the suspects and Ms. Barbosa, the chief said. Police believe the killings occurred during a robbery targeting money from a safe at the check-cashing business where Ms. Barbosa worked.

The three other victims were shot after walking in on the crime in progress at Ms. Barbosa's house, police said.

Relatives of the gunshot victims said Friday that they were relieved to learn of the arrests.

"This is the first step," said Lori Wilson, Mr. York's mother. "Closure to me is finding out what really happened and why they deemed it necessary to kill my son. We're a long way from closure."

Ms. Wilson also said she recognized Mr. May's name as that of a former football player at McKinney High School.

Records show that Mr. May was arrested in 2000 on a misdemeanor trespassing charge. Records for the other men were not available Friday night.

Police said that the informant's tip led them to a house in McKinney and that a search of that house Thursday evening led them to the three men.

Authorities said one of the suspects gave investigators a voluntary statement describing his involvement in the crime and implicating the others. The chief would not say which suspect gave the statement. He said that it included details that would be known only to police and those who took part in the crime.

The other two men were being interviewed late Friday, the chief said.

One of the suspects, Mr. Jones, had been arrested earlier in the week and was in the Collin County Jail when police identified him as a suspect in the killings. Mr. May and Mr. Walker were arrested Friday in McKinney.

All of the suspects are talking to police, authorities said. None of them has been offered a deal for leniency that was mentioned last week by Chief Kowalski. He would not say whether anyone else had been linked to the robbery.

Yes, I believe they all lived in the house where they were murdered, if I recall correctly.

Only the aunt and Mark Barbosa lived in the house. The other two boys were both seniors and lived with their parents. All three boys walked into the house while the perps were already there. The two seniors just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

There are pictures of the victims. It is interesting that we have no pictures of the alleged perpetrators. Of course, we recognize that The Dallas Morning News (or any other liberal newspaper) wouldn't reveal the pictures just because the accused parties are neither white nor Hispanic. (One suspects men with given names like Jecory are African-American.) However, if the victims were non-white and the perpetrators looked like the late Mr. Self and Mr. York, their pictures would not only be plastered all over the local news in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, but nationwide.

Of course, this will not be treated as a hate crime.
