The first poll for the 1st Congressional District race, which is more than six months away, shows Republican incumbent Rick Renzi leading Democratic challenger Paul Babbitt by 11 percentage points. The scientific poll, conducted using a random sample of 611 likely voters in the district, is expected to serve as a baseline for Northern Arizona University's Social Research Laboratory, which plans to track the race through Nov. 2.

The poll found 49 percent of likely voters would support Renzi, compared to Babbitt's 38 percent. Northern Arizona University's Social Research Laboratory released the results of its phone poll on Tuesday. The survey was conducted April 7 through 11 and had a sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

As far as demographics, the poll did uncover a significant gender difference within the electorate. A reported 56 percent of men say they would vote for Renzi if the election was held today, compared with 35 percent who would vote for Babbitt. Women split their vote with 43 percent supporting Renzi and 42 percent supporting Babbitt.

Grijalva won 59% of the vote in 2002. Is there any chance he could be defeated?

This is my district. I wish we still had JD Hayworth; but he decided to go for the Scottsdale part of his old district. Renzi has done a nice job, and he is of the (R) persuasion; but the Babbitt name up north, and with Flagstaff and the Navajo Rez being pro-Babbitt (no matter what the first name), I agree that this race will tighten and become very much in jeopardy.

The Babbitt family is generally despised in N. Arizona, especially on the Navajo reservation. The Babbitts used to operate a large number of trading posts up there, and were caught by the government shortchanging the Indians. The Babbitt trading company was forced into a settlement by the Feds while proclaiming "no wrong-doing".

Thank you. Somehow, I was thinking that when Bruce ran for Gov.& Atty Gen (not in that order), he pretty well swept Flagstaff and the Rez clean. Or was that the Verkamps? (sometimes I get them confused).
