Reception of Holy Eucharist is so serious a threat to the salvation of nonbelievers that early church fathers taught that it was seriously sinful to give them communion. The holy body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus that is the Eucharist cannot be taken by one who is not in communion with the beliefs of the Church. Reception of it by a person of such a disposition as Kerry's is an objective condemnation.
The pope taught concerning public espousal of abortion by politicians and validity of communion with the Church; it's a shame the cardinal could not obey.
