Now that's what I call pain tolerance.

The closest thing that I can think of to this is fictional, but probably based on a real-life experience. There's a scene from the recent movie "Master and Commander," where the ship doctor gets shot accidently, and they take him to island where he removes the bullet himself.

I'm amazed she didn't kill herself. There's a lot of stuff you need to get out of the way before you reach the uterus, like intestines etc.

During a regular C-section you can get to the baby very fast. I'm amazed she didn't die of sepsis considering the condition of the "operating room".

I watched vets do a C section on a pregnant Bulldog on Animal Planet the other morning. The thought of doing this to ones self is mind boggling. The poor dog had 8 puppies
(a normal litter for the breed is 3-4). All were larger than normal. The dog needed the C-section because the womb had grown so large that the poor dog could not breathe, nor eat, nor drink any more -- her whole inside cavity was full of puppies!
I do not know how this poor, brave woman knew where to cut without harming herself, or the baby. God Bless them both.

She obviously had learned more through her experience in slaughtering animals than anyone would have thought possible. People who live skillful hands-on lives are incredibly knowledgeable about their world. God bless this woman who valued life so highly! She might live in poverty, but she's a lot richer than a lot of us here in the US!!

I don't know, call me skeptical, but I just can't buy it.

A country gal can survive. It's fuzzy at what point the local nurse got there and if she did more than merely stitch the woman up. What deserves attention is that the woman had to wait several hours at the hospital.

Think mother bears protecting her young. Mothers possess an incredibly fierce instinct to protect their children. I wasn't sure when I first read this that it could be true, but here we learn that she had experience slaughtering animals, so I think it's possible.
My cat got hit by a car in the road when I was very small. My mom scooped it up out of the road, got a neighbor, and they chloroformed that cat (and nearly put themselves to sleep), operated on it and the critter lived. Both of these women were uneducated but had grown up in the country. I realize that's not the same as operating on yourself, but this woman knew that she did not want to lose another baby. She saw to it that she didn't too. Good on her!

I'm not saying a woman wouldn't try it, just that she could survive it.

But there's no evidence to prove it's not true, so no point defending my position I guess. I just remain stubbornly skeptical :-)

I do. Normal childbirth is incredibly heroic in itself. Considering the pain she must have endured up to that point, I might consider cutting myself open in order to end it as well.
People do some pretty amazing things sometimes. Most of us are never in a situation so life and death extreme. We can't even imagine the mental thought processes that might lead to such a decision.
At any rate, people have often amputated a limb themselves in order to escape a dangerous situation. This doesn't seem much different, only more risky, with less chance of success.

If anything is tried often enough, odds are, some will be successful. I think she was lucky, but also experienced and tough.

The woman and her son, her ninth child, both survivedI bet the pro-abortion Nazis are sad that the baby survived.

I'm not saying a woman wouldn't try it, just that she could survive it. Do a google search on: climber amputates arm
That's cutting through a main artery. He survived afterwards by rappelling to the ground and hiking out.
