Licenses for Migrants Urge [Florida's Bush joins licenses for illegals insanity]

MIAMI — Four months after California repealed a law allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver's licenses, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has thrown his support behind a bill that would let the estimated 400,000 foreigners illegally working in this state to get licenses following background checks.

"We shouldn't allow them to come into the country to begin with, but once they're here, what do you do?" the president's brother said Monday. "Do you basically say they are lepers to society? That they don't exist?"

Foes of the proposal, however, complained that it would reward lawbreakers, and they predicted it would have a rough ride in the Legislature.

One observer of the state political scene said the measure seemed to be the latest Republican attempt to woo Latinos, the largest minority group in this key political battleground.

What's this absolute mania the Bush family has to make life easier for illegal aliens in the US?

Good morning, John. I posted the following in another thread on this same subject:

I think there are people (like Jeb) who are willing to twist themselves into however many knots it takes to convince themselves and others that they are not rewarding illegal aliens when they are, in fact, rewarding illegal aliens.

Everything that is done to make it easier for an illegal not only makes a mockery of the law, it is giving tacit approval to all of the garbage that is part and parcel of illegal immigration. It further encourages the breaking of the law (being here illegally) and that is the starting point of the chain reaction that has given us the mess we have today. Why encourage more of the same?

It's very simple to me. You either believe that being a nation of laws is a good idea, or you don't. I expect the government to enforce the law. What Jeb is dishing up is a big ol' spoonful of Bandini's finest and expecting me to chew, swallow, smile and ask for more. No thanks.

No, you tell them that they can get a driver's license and find out where they live and go pick them up and DEPORT them.

Jeb has no reason to care if people get upset over this. Term limits means he's not up for re-election.

The scary thing is that Florida got very strict with immigrants getting drivers liscences since a good numer of 9/11 hijackers who were in the country illegally got their liscences here! Now, us legal immigrants have to jump through hoops at the DMV to get liscences link to the expiration date on our visas. WHat expiration date will be there for the illegals?

My guess is that the DMV workers were complaining about too many people coming in without INS documentation for their liscences and giving them a hard time. I had to wait in line for 2 hours (in the immigrant line up) becasue some idiot who didn't speak English had 3 different names on his immigration paperwork and the workers there are not trained to understand all the ins and outs of immigrations law. So 2 hours were spent trying to figure out what to do with this guy.

Jeb's license for illegals is different from a citizen's. If they get such a license, they can't vote, etc. and we can then track them.

Right now we have no idea who they are, where they are, and how many there are. That needs to change.

Then why would an illegal even bother with this?

Right now we have no idea who they are, where they are, and how many there are. That needs to change.

Why? Do you believe the feds will do anything at all about deporting them?

1. To avoid major legal problems from driving without a license.

2. There is an effort underway to deport felons.

I'm not sure what problems you're talking about. In California, illegals driving without a license just get a ticket and then they're on their merry way.

2. There is an effort underway to deport felons.

Rounding up and deporting the felons is important, but it won't make a dent in the illegal alien population. It's rarely a felony for someone to be here illegally and in the meantime, more of them are crossing the border every day.

1. Driving without a valid DL is a serious offense in most states, and should get you arrested (I can't speak for CA, but this thread is about FL)

2. Getting the felons rounded up is the most important step, IMO. I don't have the same antipathy toward the honest, working illegals as you do. They fill a labor need. However, I am opposed to their children getting citizenship because they're born here, and I'm opposed to illegals receiving anything other than very short-term social services.

I don't have the same antipathy toward the honest, working illegals as you do.

There is no way to know who is even in this country anymore, let alone being able to sort them out by work ethic. They are here illegally. They're working in violation of the law. They're either evading taxes by getting paid in cash or they're using stolen or forged ID. Their mantra seems to be "I just want a better life (and I'm willing to break the law to get it)." Where do you draw the line? When does their "honesty" kick in?

They fill a labor need.

They fill the "needs" of greedy, often abusive, and dishonest employers. We're creating an underclass of people and that is not an action free of consequences.

However, I am opposed to their children getting citizenship because they're born here, and I'm opposed to illegals receiving anything other than very short-term social services.

You can oppose it all you want, but it won't be ending any time soon. The chldren born here are citizens. Their birth anchors the parents here to the point that they (the parents) end up with de facto citizenship.

I can't see any way of cleaning up what was an illegal act to begin with. IMO, a half-baked solution is no solution at all. It still rewards illegal behavior.

That was exactly my point, in post #8 to this thread! The issuance of a separate 'illegals' license would register them.
