[history]
THE prevailing opinion is Bush gets re- elected. People don't change leaders mid-war. Thus, certain Dem brains are plotting a crafty assault on the GOP. Having worked out what they consider is a creative attack based on the soaring petrol prices, they'll lay its blame on this administration.

Sitting in their own little neat safe offices, the way they've strategized it, they anticipate getting not only the doves but also the hawks. All they'll get are the fools.

BUT, if gas prices can be kept at present levels, or lower, just until the election, Daschle and his cronies will be deeply saddened!

All they'll get are the fools....fools can cause the outcome of a Presidency.

The Bush campaign anticipated this line of attack, which is one reason they've been running the "Kerry wanted a 50 cent per gallon gas tax increase" ads. In other words, high gas prices may be a problem, but Kerry's never shown any indication that he thinks it's a problem, or else he wouldn't have supported jacking them up even further.
The Dems are in a similar trap on the Medicare drug bill cost estimate issue. They're saying "Bush lied, it actually is going to cost $540 billion instead of $400 billion"--yet their alternative is either to kill the drug program (reducing aid to seniors) or else institute the far more expensive Democratic alternative (costing $1 trillion or so). Their argument is self-defeating.

If Cheney were truly an evil puppet master, here's what he'd say to his friends at Halliburton:
"Boys, give me cheap gas for the next 7 months or so. Make it around $1.20 a gallon at the pump. If you do that for me, we'll get re-elected -- and then, I promise you: $5.00 a gallon for 4 solid years!"
The fact that Cheney isn't doing such manipulation is an indication that Cindy Adams has her head up her you-know-what.

There is a good editorial in the WSJ today, explaining how the gasoline prices are not at all high in relation to earnings and saying that most people are not even paying much attention to the gas prices. In comparison to 1972 the per capita income has doubled, but gas prices are up only 35%.
The point is that reporters are creating a story where none exists.

Could it be that W is waiting for the dems to make their move before announcing Condi will be his running mate? Give 'em enough rope and they'll always hang themselves.
It's funny how they say Bush is dumb then he outsmarts them. That makes them dumb and dumber. Or, as W would say, "dumb and dumberer."

Also reporters never break down the costs. On the pump I frequent it gives my state tax (.24), fed tax, environmental tax (1.5 and will go up each year automatically).
That equals approx. .45 cents on every gallon and .47 on diesel. (these are approximate that serves my memory) Prices (ME) are 1.79-1.89-1.98 (a 1.69 jumps in here and there)

i guess their strategy doesn't include keeping this great strategy a secret, huh?!!!! wow! brilliant! quelle surprise! attack Cheney: like that hasn't been their strategy every day from Campaign 2000 to the present.

The article also states that Gallup released a poll that said that only 29% of the people polled feel that the energy situation is very serious as compared to 58% who thought so during 2001, and that only 38% said that they worry about an energy shortage.

O come on....they did not pass any laws it the last two weeks. Please, I am just pointing out that prices are high. Don't be ridiculous. That sort of business is alway a factor but would not account for that mush in taht short of a time. What you expect itemized government expense at the pump? That is just silly. Normally that price would be between say $1.20 and $1.50, at least in an outer Borough, maybe a little higher on manhattan and lower upstate. $1.60 is a high price for gas in NYC but there is an occasional fluctuation due to supply. It very rarely gets above $2.00. It is supply and demand. There are some regional difference do to laws, taxes, etc but not a differential by a factor of two. People would just drive across state lines if that where the case, or you would see a black market in gas. No, for whatever the reason, prices are up in my part of the country.
