Well I can understand the mom being confused and not knowing where she is. My mom can say something and in five minutes will BELLIGERENTLY deny having said it. She's 714 and I KNOW she has Ahlzheimer's, so this 78 year old probably does too.
It's also possible they both suffer from some sort of genetic disease that causes confusion, and the son doesn't know he has it yet. Huntington's Disease for example.
