Sadly true. The Sierras are probably my favorite place on earth, and they've taken a lot of hits in the last few years. And don't get me stated on some of the shenanigans that have been perpetrated in Yosemite Valley.
But John Muir was one of the Great Americans in my book. He loved this country in a way few can equal today.

Yes, I've hiked. And I've used a walking stick. And California is trying to lead the nation in being the Nanny state, supplying cradle-to-grave tax-supported programs that are breaking the economic back. And your comment is relevant in what way? Oh, I get it, maintaining Yosemite is one of the 'cradle-to-grave tax-supported programs that are breaking the economic back'.
I'm glad you're not in charge of the National Gallery. You would have sold all those damn paintings and stuff on EBay a long time ago.

It was satire. Deal with it.

Yes. Some would definitely have made their way into private hands by now, though through ebay is unlikely. Maybe via Christies.... :)

But John Muir was one of the Great Americans in my book. He loved this country in a way few can equal today. Unfortunately, Muir's socialist model for government preservation of nature, however well intentioned and necessary at the time, has since done an enormous amount damage to the very assets we all value so greatly. There are now better mmanagement systems with which to care for the planet if we but motivate the creativity and intelligence to learn how to use them.
I ask that you read this and get back to me.

to pick an "eco-wacko" and a "Butt Ugly" bird.
A buzzard and a National Park that's too congested to visit...

Yosemite Valley is about eight square miles out of the 440 square miles of Yosemite. It is such a small part of Yosemite, and people refer to the Valley to say that Yosemite is over crowded, congested, etc. If they would get out of the Valley, they would see a completely different place.
What do you mean when you say shenanigans? Yosemite is my favorite place -- I go there about six times a year. I miss the old run down Valley, with the crowded junky stores and cheap food, and the old shuttle buses where they'd take out the windows in the summer. Now it seems they're trying to make it like a lot of the other national parks and make it more modern, etc. I think the Valley is losing some of its charm. But we only go to the Valley in the winter. In the summer and fall we go backpacking in the high country.
And I love John Muir, too.

The irony the Half Dome is on federal, not state property, apparently escaped the design committee's grasp.
A more PC group would have scraped the rock and modified the collage:
A condor on the left to symbolize the state's ancient past.
John Miur in the center to symbolize the state's rise to popularity
A Hispanic immigrant on the right to symbolize the state's future.

I like it. One of the better state quarters IMO.

PC crap. It should have a prospector, the Golden gate Bridge and the Hollywood sign. That's what represents CA to most of the world. I'm thinking the Matterhorn or some Mickey Mouse ears are something more people would associate with California than Half Dome.

Well, I wanted the miner prospecting for gold with the bear in the background.
At least it isn't the gay "waves" image that was proposed.
Looks like John F'n Kerry with beard, doing an AlGore post-election mope?

You are so right! Muir = liberal, Condor = vulture, bald dome = a mountain after taxes.

have you ever been outside the valley? Since the late 1960s, I've logged over 400 miles both on and off trails in the Yosemite high country, most of it solo.

I'm sorry, but that has what to do with John Muir's walking stick on the California quarter? Your non sequitors are showing.
