911 emergency? (Dialing an ambulance, or the police?)

My guess is that dialing 911 in certain areas of NYC doesn't connect you to the emergency switchboard.

Anyways, good thing the citizens of NYC are allowed to arm themselves, otherwise who knows what would happen if the criminals decided to act all at once...

Ah. Thanks. "911 Down in Parts of NYC" would have been clear; I kept trying to figure out what "NYC 911" meant and how it might possibly be tied somehow to 9/11 in NYC...

The new Secondhand Smoke Tracking System probably brought the 911 system down.

As far as I know you are correct. Said in parts of Brooklyn, Bronx, and Manhattan.

What am I supposed to do in an emergency; call 311 and leave a message?!

Headline is very confusing.
Should read:
911 system down in parts of NYC
or something to that effect...

Your supposed to call your local police department, if you know the number.
To: rmlew
Light a cigarette and they'll be there in five seconds.

Call 411 and ask them for the number of 911.

Do what I did. Program the actual phone number of the police dispatcher into speed dial, and the switchboard number of the hospital into another. Jot those down on a piece of paper and tape the paper somewhere next to the phone.

So, i should call 411 to get the local PD?
Should I also call the local hospital? (Actually, I've been to LEnox Hill hospital. It would be safer to walk up to Mt. Sinai than hang out in that ER.) This is nuts!

LOL.
However, being allergic to cigarette smoke, i would need an ambulance, not the boys in blue.
