Great...more government interference in the private sector...and from Republicans, the alleged party of smaller government.

I'm all in favor of universal broadband access, but I'm way opposed to having the government figure out how to do it. That's a recipe for either a technical disaster or a high-priced subsidy to rural residents (or both).

And Bush should know that, if he's as smart and principled as the people on this forum seem to think he is.

I was going to say just that n there would be no internet but for "government interference." Anyway, I think that he is talking about easing certain FCC trestrictions on the "last mile" and promoting broadband wireless with tax incentives. It is more a case of having more competition - hardly a great deal of "interference." It will come anyway. We are lagging a little behind the EU due to some bad ploicy left over from the Clinton yes. Somone needs to goose Powell's kid over at the FCC.

Most communities have only one service provider which eliminates competition. That's why cable networks are charging high prices. The government should allow competition for the same service. That would drive down consumer costs.

Actually not true, but who wants to pay long distance to access National providers? I know I sure don't, but I know a lady who needs AOL because she started a business in Texas, moved to Montana, and didn't want to change e-mail addresses. She only uses AOL for e-mail and the local provider (small phone company) that I use, for everything else.
