I grew up not far from there and ate Tomales Bay oysters regularly. The cows and sheep grazed in the same places 40-50 years ago as they do today, probably in more, as there was less development. Nobody I knew ever got sick from Tomales Bay oysters (which I have to confess are not as good as the colder water oysters in Maine). I would have to guess it was the human waste who have moved into the area over the past 35 years or so, from hippies to yuppies. It's gotten so a a farmer can't even leave his truck unlocked by the feedstore anymore.
