I am reading Rick Atkinson's "An Army at Dawn," about the 1942-3 campaign in North Africa. I found myself chuckling at the Vichy Government and the attitude of the French generals, who couldn't seem to decide whether to fight with or against the Germans, or to just surrender outright. As the French themselves like to say, "The more things change, the more they remain the same."

My response is that many of us on this site are very sympathetic with the oppressed people of Iran. We have had members of the resistance post here when the largest demonstrations were going on and we encouragedc them and felt strong identification of their dangerous struggle against the current theocratic despots.

We are also aware that the US is very popular among the young people of Iran, because they know that there is another answer than what their government presents to them.

It is very common in history for a tryannical government to be very distant and inimical to the real wishes of their people. (Mass Murdering Sadam a good example). It is a shame that more countries don't name evil governnments.

Shall we discuss the UN Oil for Food Bribes that went to Chirac's associate?
