Traitor Joe's uncle (also named Joe Bangert) is for real--George Feifer's book
Tennozan: The Battle of Okinawa and the Atomic Bomb (1992) mentions him several times. He was a medical corpsman in the war and was one of the men selected to raise the US flag at the southern end of Okinawa at the close of the campaign in June 1945. He died in 1988. According to a footnote, he was bothered for the rest of his life over an incident when he fired at what he thought were Japanese soldiers, but turned out to be Okinawan nurses.
Feifer's book has been reissued without the word "Tennozan" in the title.

"My uncle fought at Iwo Jima, Tarawa, Saipan and Okinawa."
"Traitor Joe's uncle...was a medical corpsman"
What does Bangert mean by fight?

The Traitor Part 1When Dustys mom is unable to pay her medical bills, Extensive Enterprises, a covert Cobra supplier, offers to lend a hand. It seems Cobra Commander is very interested in acquiring the formula to G. I. Joes indestructible armor coating. Instead, Dusty sells them information about a Joe ambush that nearly costs Duke his life. Episode 2: The Traitor Part 2Now labeled a traitor, Dusty joins Cobra in their destruction of G. I. Joe. And to top that off, Cobras got a few Joe prisoners on which to try out their mind-control gas. As Dustys final test of loyalty, Cobra Commander puts him in charge of pulling the switch.

Sir, corpsman Joe Bangert is not uncle of “Traitor Joe”.I can say that with absolute certainty, because I am corpsman Joe’s son former Marine Corps Capt.Joe Bangert jr.The rest is accurate to a point. The story about the nurses has some validity to it ,but as they say there was a lot more to it as was told to me by my father.Mainly just wanted to get the facts straight about family relationships.
