FEC proposes plan to curb political groups (anti-Bush organizations)

Federal election officials proposed new rules Thursday that could sharply curb the activities of private political groups intent on influencing this year's presidential election.

Although the action by the Federal Election Commission is not final, it drew objections from non-profit groups allied with Democrats who fear that continuing legal uncertainty will dampen their fundraising.

Good start, but I don't see why they have to wait until May to finalize this.

I just hope the FEC does something before May -- these Dem organizations can collect a lot of money before that -- from Soros, for example.

YOu are mistaken.

This is not oriented towards "third parties" -- this is oriented towards certain groups like Moveon.org and others who claim to be certain kinds of organizations not subject to the election laws, yet they are engaging in activities, which are regulated and forbidden by election law.

Dude, when George Soros pledges $15 million to the Constitution party and the FEC tries to block it, then you'll have a beef. The elephant and the donkey are too busy to even notice the little 3rd party gnats.

I agree -- speech shouldn't be regulated. BUT you also can't have one group obeying the rules and the other one circumventing them.

I agree that contributions and ads shouldn't be regulated, beyond some very minimum . I am totally against the McCain-Feingold law, but nevertheless it's the law now.

The question now is not about the freedom of speech -- that's been left in the proverbial dust.

The question now is, "How can I use the law to stop my opponent?."

I will vote for President Bush this Fall, but his failure to veto the Campaign Finance "Reform" Act is very disappointing.
