Furor over Bush's 9/11 ad
New York Daily News ^ | 3/04/04 | MAGGIE HABERMAN in New York , THOMAS M. DeFRANK in Washington

The Bush reelection campaign yesterday unveiled its first three campaign commercials showcasing Ground Zero images, angering some 9/11 families who accused President Bush of exploiting the tragedy for political advantage.

"It's a slap in the face of the murders of 3,000 people," said Monica Gabrielle, whose husband died in the twin tower attacks. "It is unconscionable."

Gabrielle and several other family members said the injury was compounded by Bush's refusal to testify in open session before the 9/11 commission.

"I would be less offended if he showed a picture of himself in front of the Statue of Liberty," said Tom Roger, whose daughter was a flight attendant on doomed American Airlines Flight 11. "But to show the horror of 9/11 in the background, that's just some advertising agency's attempt to grab people by the throat."

Mindy Kleinberg said she was offended because the White House has not cooperated fully with the commission and because of the sight of remains being lifted out of Ground Zero in one of the spots.

"How heinous is that?" Kleinberg asked. "That's somebody's [loved one]."

Firefighter Tommy Fee in Rescue Squad 270 in Queens was appalled.

"It's as sick as people who stole things out of the place. The image of firefighters at Ground Zero should not be used for this stuff, for politics," Fee said.

But Jennie Farrell, who lost her brother, electrician James Cartier, called the ad "tastefully done," adding: "It speaks to the truth of the times. Sept. 11 ... was something beyond the realm of imagination, and George Bush ... led us through one of the darkest moments in history."

The gauzy, upbeat spots, aimed at shoring up Bush's sagging approval numbers, begin airing today on national cable networks and 50 media markets in 17 states that Bush-Cheney strategists consider electoral battlegrounds.

Two ads, including a Spanish version, show fleeting images of the World Trade Center devastation. The 30-second spots include a poignant image of an American flag fluttering defiantly amid the WTC wreckage.

One, titled "Safer, Stronger," also features a one-second shot of firefighters removing the flag-draped remains of a victim from the twisted debris.

Both ads reinforce the Ground Zero imagery with frontal shots of two firefighters. Unlike the paid actors and actresses in most of the footage, they are not ringers, but their red headgear gives them away as non-New Yorkers. The Bush campaign declined to reveal where the burly smoke-eaters actually work.

Bush officials defended the imagery as totally appropriate.

"9/11 was the defining moment of these times," campaign manager Ken Mehlman told reporters. "Because of that day, America is at war and still is."

Charging Democratic rival John Kerry with politicizing the attacks by alleging Bush has turned his back on the city, Mehlman added: "The President's never forgotten. It's a central part of his leadership."

The spots, pegged to the theme of "steady leadership in time of change," do not mention Kerry. Instead, their uplifting message hopes to refurbish Bush's battered image after two months of harsh Democratic attacks and a series of missteps by the normally surefooted White House political apparatus.

"We've been off our game for weeks," a senior Bush strategist conceded. "Thank goodness, there's plenty of time to get well, and plenty of grist to chop Kerry down to size."

I know they're democrats too, not just by their feigned outrage, but by their possessiveness and greediness with their victimhood.

On the left, victimhood is a powerful weapon that's been successfully used in the past to enable their extreme agenda. Recently, it's being used as the pretext for defending the lawless mayors around America who are shamefully approving gay marriages. After all, what cold-hearted person can side against gays, who are victims of discrimination? In victimhood is power.

But victimhood is an exclusive club, monitored closely by the left; and they're very jealous of letting outsiders in. Leftists hoard their victim status precisely because it is a weapon. It must be reserved for a those who share their approved agenda for America.

What's going on here is plain to see if you listen closely. Leftists don't want to let 9-11 be America's outrage, America's pain. If it were, then we'd all be justified in our natural and instinctive trust that President Bush was and is the right man at the right time. Leftists will have none of that. They want to define who the real victims are, and then stage tearful press conferences using these shills as their mouthpieces to teach us that we have all been hoodwinked by President Bush. "Don't believe your lying eyes," they'll tell us, "listen to the victims. Victims know!"

To fight back, WE must maintain forcefully and in their face that 9-11 was not their private tragedy, let alone a tragedy to be exploited for the ironic purpose of electing a radical pacifist as President. No, 9-11 was America's tragedy. And we in the heartland are thankful that it was President Bush at the head of state when those planes attacked.

Never forget.

God Bless AMERICA.

Fascinating! This needs to get a bit of "air time", like that dude quoted about Hellery's book signing in NYC.

GWB's ads are fabulous. He directed them himself and it shows. He is relaxed and articulate. Really powerful ads.

By their bitching and complaining, the democrats have already proved the ads are way too effective. :)

You said it better than I could in post 141. I've been trying to come up with a way on how I felt about the "victimization" aspect, but your post takes the cake.

They were all on it this morning. All of the left leaning media already have poll questions on it. I'm so sick of this. If families of the victims don't get it, sometimes I wonder if there's any hope at all any more to win the war on terror.

If I'm not mistaken, the conventions bring quite a bit of revenue to the city in which they are held. Giving New York a financial plum is hardly exploitive.

So, let me get this right, Bush is not allowed to bring up 911, Kerry's voting record and anything good that Bush has done?....hmmm!

He's also not allowed to leave the White House, because if he goes anywhere it will be for "political" reasons. You know, like Daytona.

Basically, the democrats have said he's grounded. No phone, no TV.

".....Yeah, Sparky, I'm dead serious. 9/11 is a sacred moment to Americans...."

Well I'm an American, and I viewed the attack from the first moment it was broadcast. That moment changed our Country forever.

YOUR use of the phrase "sacred moment" is offensive to me. It may be sacred to the terrorists but not to Americans.

Sacred: (1. Dedicated to or set apart for worship. 2. Made or declared Holy. 3. Worthy of religious veneration. 4. Dedicated or devoted exclusively to a single use or person. 5. Worthy of reverence or respect.)

9/11 may be sacred to the terrorists, but to many of us, it is a day of infamy and evil. A day to remember indeed. A day most Americans became aware of the forces determined to destroy us and everything we stand for. An insight into the mind of evil men determined to perpetrate evil. We can respect the final resting place of many of the dead, but "sacred?" I think not!

Too many people would have us forget that day as a milestone in our history. I, for one, will never forget.

I will also never forget President Bush standing atop that pile of rubble and smoke and his determination. I will never forget knowing that he meant what he said. You may think he spoke empty words or political rhetoric. But I know he said what he meant and meant what he said. That is a FACT and that has been proved by action.

What's it going to take for New Yorkers to wake up and smell the coffee? Are they volunteering for another strike? Did they get some kind of sick pleasure out of the last one that they are so willing to forget?

Perhaps these morons ought to find out what Kerry believes before they go bashing our President, the one who stood up for them.

Honest New Yorkers ought to ride these dangerous people out of town on a rail.

One person says he would be "less" offended if the President was shown in a pic with the Statue of Liberty.

I think some idiots will be offended by anything.

Bingo! F'em.
